View Full Version : Tranny went bye-bye

10-02-2007, 12:37 AM
The inevitable happened. :( I went for a drive this evening and didn't really even open it up....just a spirited sprint and that was all. The tranny started having some funny vibrations as I was pulling through the front gate. By the time I got to the Shopette, 1st was gone. It starts is 2nd and will go into 3rd, but if I manually pull it back to 2nd, it moans and shudders bad. Putting the selector in 1st results in absolutely nothing but free revs.

This sucks. My funds went to the my car gets to sit for a while until I decide what I am going to do. Minimum $1000 for a new tranny and $250 for a converter clean. Maybe it's time to spring for the FLT and never look back. I know I only paid $500 dollars for this was a bandaid to get me through another year or so. But I thought it would have taken a little more abuse than I ever gave it. Only went to the track twice with it and never got over 210*. Pretty lame if you ask me, but what did I expect.

Moral of the story: You get what you pay for. I should have known when I bought it.....actually, I think I did. I'm not at all surprised that it gave up the ghost. So no new track times for '07.

Good reason to UPGRADE :thumb: (sorry for the loss though)

10-02-2007, 12:49 AM
Probably woulda lasted longer with better shocks. :jest:

Definitely time for an upgrade.

Damn, everyone's cars are goin down..
Break it and build it better man..
I got $1600 in the Tranny I have, eventually it will go out, they all do..:bomb:

It was running around 210*?
Mine runs at about 175*-180* hot..and I know you have a couple of coolers on yours...interesting..

10-02-2007, 12:53 PM
aww damn ben:cry: .....(sigh) well whats the deal w/ the LSX Shootout???

10-02-2007, 02:16 PM
oh no. that just plain sucks. I feel for ya brother. Well, I say a T-56 :secret2::secret:

10-02-2007, 02:53 PM
I was goin to say that..:jest:

I have been debating doing that as well..Auto is consistant on the Track, but a M6 with my setup would be killer on highway races..

210 was the hottest it ever saw. Typical temps were around 150-165.

So I can be slower?:D

Actually, my first LS1 was a 6-speed and I loved it.....but after the cam install, I'm sold on autos. I gave the 6-speed swap a lot of thought, but when it came down to it, I just couldn't do it. A4's will never be king on the highway, but I really enjoy them. When traction is available, digs and slow rolls are  . My long-term goals are drag oriented, and so long as it is streetable, I'll be happy. If I had 3.73's right now I'd be super tempted to swap in a PT4400 converter. As it is, I'll keep the SS4000 and get a good tranny.

Motivation for me is hearing the "too bad it's an auto" comment. A couple people have said that and been schooled after a quick ride around the block:nod:. It all comes down to personal preference, and the A4 does it for me. If I ever buy another F-body, it'll proly be a 6-speed, but only if I keep the Hawk.

Like I said, the A4 will never rule the highway, but here's a little piece showing the A4's where they shine. That's what I'm talking about!

10-02-2007, 04:51 PM
My favorite is the Black SS against the Z06 from a dig.....and then the same two cars from a roll. Shows both trannies at their best!

10-02-2007, 04:53 PM
That's some good Racin..
We all should find a spot and get some day-time footage playin around. I know Bene has a good Camera..

10-02-2007, 11:17 PM
Those Videos Rocked!
Reminds me of the old days.

Sorry to hear about losing the tranny. My TA sat for over a year before I could get the $$$$ up to have it rebuilt. Hope yours won't be that long.

It won't be a year, but it might be a few months. Oh well, I didn't drive it much anyway.

10-03-2007, 12:44 AM
man that sucks balls what happen to your tranny, i heard that it would throw you back whenever you rode in it.

10-03-2007, 03:43 AM
Him and Bene could get them cars to hook up real quick on the street..they must be pretty much at the perfect power level to keep traction on the street and haul ass..:drive:

10-03-2007, 10:20 AM
^^^That was with Nittos. I never got the chance to put the Nittos back on since I got the cam in. Anything below 40 before and after the cam was pointless on street tires. I was able to hook from a 5 MPH roll once or twice with the Nittos and I must say that is a wonderful feeling.

10-03-2007, 10:35 AM
Yes it is..
I managed to get the MT's that are on there now to Hook up from a stop one hot day playin around..damn near threw my nuts in the Back Seat..

Great new.....looks like I'll have a new transmission going in next week or so. I also have to send in my converter, so that'll take some time. Goal is to be running again week after next. Perhaps in time for Memphis on the 18th :D.

I'll be using Caleb.....I've heard great reviews about him and his tranny.

10-03-2007, 07:49 PM
Great new.....looks like I'll have a new transmission going in next week or so..

That's cool.

10-03-2007, 08:03 PM
I'll be using Caleb.....I've heard great reviews about him and his tranny.

He is the guy that built mine. Very knowledgeable guy. He's got a pretty quick Cobra that he runs.

If you get yours straightened out, you want to plan something for the 18th?

10-03-2007, 09:22 PM
I would like to hook Bene up since he's on leave the week after, but Memphis doesn't have anything that week. Sorry Bene. If my car is running, the 18th is when I plan on racing.

On a side note, what better time than now to go with 3.73's and a restall......something along the lines of 4200-4400 and a lower STR . That ought to give me an edge on highway runs .

10-03-2007, 09:29 PM
Yes it will..
What are you goin with for the new STR?

10-03-2007, 10:13 PM
damn ben. Here I am thinking it's gonna be down for a long while, then bam! you get everything fixed! and new mods! I may go as well to memphis.

10-03-2007, 10:22 PM
damnit nobody answerd my question about the LSX SHOOTOUT!!!!

10-03-2007, 10:47 PM
damn ben. Here I am thinking it's gonna be down for a long while, then bam! you get everything fixed! and new mods! I may go as well to memphis.

Come on out Jessie...lets get a convoy out there again..

10-04-2007, 12:37 AM
damn ben. Here I am thinking it's gonna be down for a long while, then bam! you get everything fixed! and new mods! I may go as well to memphis.

Where there's a will, there's a way :D.

Not sure on the STR yet...I'll be talking to Yank tomorrow to get their input. I might just leave it alone. Ryan wasn't sure that more stall RPM was right for me. It's all about getting that shift extension where it needs to be, and right now it's not too bad. I'll post up after I decide which route I'm going. I also might spring for the 3.90's versus the 3.73's. I don't see much highway and that's a nice compromise between 3.73's and 4.10's, which are too much IMO. I'm kind of leary about the 3.90's, but we'll see.

10-04-2007, 01:29 AM
3.90's are what i want as well

10-04-2007, 09:11 AM
With a A4 I was thinking of the 3.90's..but it depends on your RPM Range and Tire Size I guess. I'm goin to 6800-7000 area with my shifts, so I decided to stick with the 3.73's. 4.10's and some 28" Tires with a high Stall like your Ben would launch pretty damn sick..

10-04-2007, 02:19 PM
Where does Caleb work? I getting my tranny built and have been calling around locally. Where do you plan to get yours built?

10-04-2007, 05:35 PM
He works out of Searcy.

10-04-2007, 05:50 PM
Looks like 3.90's and a PT4000 converter. Slight chance that I might go to a PT4400, but for now it looks like PT4000. And Kris is building my tranny. Caleb is a little too rude for my tastes and wouldn't tell me what I'm getting for my money. Sorry, but if I'm dropping that kind of cash, I want to know what components I'm getting.

10-04-2007, 10:25 PM
I think it's a good choice.

10-04-2007, 10:48 PM
RDTA was a huge help. He put everything into perspective and shared his experience with the different gear choices and converters (3.73's vs 3.90's and SS4000 vs PT4000 vs PT4400). Which is what led me to my choice of 3.90's and PT4000.

As far as my old tranny......I would highly recommend that no one ever use Arkansas Transmission Specialists (if they're even still in business). If you feel compelled to use them, allow me to rebuild your tranny instead. I won't charge anything since I have not a clue what I'm doing, but at a minimum I'll remember to install all the transmission bolts. On top of that, I had a sudden O2 sensor malfunction after they put my tranny in. I purchased new ones and then discovered that they had plugged my front O2's into my rear O2 connectors when I went to change them. No wonder they didn't work. I'm not perfect, but I remember where shit goes, especially when the wires damn near didn't reach the rear connections. And yes, we found the top two bolts missing from the transmission. How lazy can you get. These are the guys who bragged to me about their extensive LS1 knowledge.

Maybe I'm harsh, but anyone who knows me knows that I'm fair when I give feedback to people. Take Shane....he does one hell of a tint job for an unbeatable price. I've referred several people to him who wanted a tint job (although I don't think anyone has followed through.....sorry Shane, I try!). Take Ryan...he does a hell of a job tuning, and you can't beat his deal. I've referred everyone I've met local with an LS1 to him. I've referred some locals to Kris for major maintenance on their cars because we all know he does awesome work. APE exhaust....I've sent many people that way too. The point is, I'll tell anyone who cares to know who does a great job and recommend them. The same is true of people who don't give an honest product or Arkansas Transmission Specialists. My opinion, stay the hell away from them.

10-04-2007, 10:56 PM
wow that really sucks what happened to you ben. i would be really pissed off as well.

10-05-2007, 12:06 AM
It has nothing to do with the tranny did exactly what I needed it to do when I bought it. But shotty workmanship as far as the install makes me wonder just how good the tranny was to begin with.

On top of that, two LS1tech members from out of state bought trannies from these guys and never recieved the tranny.....after sending the money. They both contacted me for any information about them I could give, but I didn't want to get caught up in the middle. I simply told them that I was pleased with their services....which I was at the time. Those two issues may have been resolved by now though......the two individuals concerned never contacted me again.

10-05-2007, 03:00 AM
I'm suprised you had a problem with and him got along no problem..I got all the info I needed..and he has helped me out and will if anything goes out in the Tranny..

As far as wrok goes man..why do you think I do my own gets done right, or from what I have researched as right...:jest:

10-05-2007, 03:39 AM

Really you cant affiliate "Everyone" that worked there. I did, and i saw how people got screwed. People did buy tranny's off this site. (on my old account) and he never shipped. He sold quite a few and shipped quite a few, but not all.

You aren't the first who has had issues, and you def. will not be the last.

I wish i would have known how bad things were going to be when i originally began working there. I have been through so many "brewer" tranny's it isn't funny.

Im sorry i had to have been even involved with the place, and yes, they are out of business.

Hope it gets fixed, and gets back on the road soon bud.

My last tranny was from Polk but I was looking into different options. Anyone know anything about Sherwood Performance? They quoted my a pretty good price and he seemed to know what he was talking about.

10-05-2007, 10:38 AM
Well the deal they offered was an installed price, so I said what the hell. I drove over, then drove home with a new transmission. I usually do my own work as well....and I will from now on.

I don't doubt Calebs trannies, but I had to pry what little bit of info I got out of him. He basically told me to just bring him the tranny and not worry about what went in it. It would be good enough. Sorry, but I need more than that. It's great that his family has been building trannies for 75 years.....but has he? That means nothing to me.

Kris told me exactly what is going in my tranny. He also told me there are no guarantees with it. I accept that and appreciate the honesty.....that goes a long way. If it fails some day, I'll understand why....and I won't blame Kris at all. Just like I don't blame Arkansas Transmission Specialists for their tranny. It did what it was supposed to do. I only blame them for the shotty workmanship on the install.

10-05-2007, 12:14 PM
It's a 4L60E man..they go eventually.
I'm expecting to see problems out of mine in about a year with continuous romps on it when it's got good Tires and it hooks..with shitty Tires and everything spinning, nothing binds up and the Torque just goes straight through.

It should work out for ya man..hopefully you can get it to the Track..:drive:

10-05-2007, 12:31 PM
You need a manual valve body. Very Nice, and seems to have lasted alot longer than just the standard auto.
