Default A4 Tranny Problems!!!

I have an 1998 Camaro Z28 with 173,XXX miles on her. Today coming home from the gym i stopped a the traffic light and when i took off easily i might add the car jerked and made a big poping noise i pulled over thinkin i blew the rear end out and saw everything was alright. i limped it home to find out i have no reverse. The car only shifts into 2-4 if you get out of the gas so it can shift then get back in it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

You are probably actually feeling 1 and 3 would be my guess and have no 2 and 4 , More than likley the sunshell stripped but with that number of miles sounds like its time for a trans and that you got a good life span out of the old one.

That means it is time to have the unit rebuilt.

Don't let someone talk you into only replacing the failed component at that mileage, it would be a poor decision. If you got that many miles out of the stock unit you did good! It deserves a nice rebuild after serving you for sooo long.

I would agree with Gilbert it would be silly to replace just the sunshell in a unit in service that long , It will likley really need many other things, Our prices are listed on our website at the link in sig , They include shipping so what you see is what you pay. Please feel free to look over what we have to offer and what others have to offer. But in any case a built unit is what you would be best to choose at this point.

Before choosing which unit you will need we will need to know what mods have you done to your vehicle. This will give us an idea of your power level and also let us know what you have planed for the future. This will be needed to make sure that you get the right unit. Feel free to give myself or Chuck a call to discuss your situation. PM's are ok as well. Vince 1-630-350-7776

almost exact same thing happened to me, coming to an off ramp my fourth pops out to third and i limp it to the closest neighborhood. i took it to Don Lee Auto this morning and they say the sun gear is busted and i need a rebuild. i may also have metal shavings in my tci 3500 so im gonna run stock TC for a while. i was quoted ~$2k for everything.

Seeing metal shavings in a converter is not abnormal at all after a trans failure. Why not just have them send it to a reputable converter shop to have it dissasembled and cleaned out, have a new clutch installed, new bearings and run it again. That usually is not expensive at all.

they were telling me if i wanted to keep the TC in there i would have to send it out to TCI, have them cut it open, clean it out, and reweld it. They also said if i wanted to do this i would only save maybe $200 max instead of buying a new one. I think im going to just keep the tranny/TC stock for now and maybe when i get a new car i could play with the Z alot more. so right now ive had my fill of a TC'd car (highly recommend) and will start bullet proofing the whole thing when i have more money =P.

I find that surprising. I have TCI, ATI, Yanks, Vigilantes' and who knows how many other converters opened up, cleaned out and freshend up dang near every day! No need to go back to TCI unless there is a question of warranty in my opinion. get in the phone book and search for a converter shop near you, talk to them and see what they can do. My money says they can do you a good job at a fair price.
