Default From 10 bolt to 8.8

Well, I pulled the 10 bolt last night since it is leaking bad and pegs out at the track. My buddy had a built 8.8 that I am going to put in it instead. Anyone running an 8.8? Do they seem to be pretty strong? Will it hold to big numbers? The torque arm mount that was fabbed up on it looks a little suspect. I am going to brace it some more and hope that it holds up. Also, does anyone know if the axle tube OD is much different between the 10 bolt and 8.8?

The axle tube OD depends on what it came out of.
Got any pics of the torque arm mount? Sure would love to see that.
Do you have any idea whats going to happen if that TA mount fails?
Consider yourself lucky if it fails at launch because if it fails down the track you may end up in the wall.

Oh I know completely!! That is why I am going to brace it myself. The deal is if my motor sells then it will be a little while until I get my new setup going. By the time I get my new setup going, I will have a 9". This was just to run if the motors happens to not sell. And to have something to push around in the driveway. I want to take the 10 bolt apart and see what the problem is it too.

There are plenty of strong running 8.8 rears out there, its a cost effective go between of a 10 bolt, to a 12-bolt/9" platform

I thought people were using the axle tubes off a 10 bolt or they were custom cut, rewelded and then welding all the mounting brackets on as well. It is a job.

Well, I have run into a number of problems on the rear. The rear was in a project car that my buddy had been working on. It was "supposed" to be set up for an fbody. All of the mounts were. Here are the problems I ran into:

1)The rear still had the 8.8 yoke on it so I had to order and install a new yoke.

2)The backing plates were on the opposite side from what they should have been so I had to pull the axles and swap sides. This was no big deal because it has c-clip eliminators.

3)The axle tube ends were so thick that the nuts would not go on the bolts that held the backing plate on. I had to grind down the tube a little so the nuts would fit. It wasn't hard just a PITA

4)After I finally get the rear in the car and the torque arm on, I went to mount the calipers to keep them from hanging and I noticed that the calipers aren't sticking out far enough to reach the rotors, which didn't matter anyway because the rotors don't fit on the studs...

So all in all, I think I am just going to go ahead and get me a 9" as soon as I can. That way I will be done with it. So much for trying to get out cheap

I know that I can drill the holes on the rotor out to fit over the studs but I would still have the caliper issue.

So are you using the ford axles? Wouldnt that mess you up on wheels?

I thought I read somewhere that you have to drill out the rotors for 5/8 studs....maybe not. I had the wheels for the rear anyway..so wheels weren't going to be an issue in my situation.

I put an 8.8 in an S10 and had Moser redrill the bolt pattern for $30 a pair and $40 shipping. I used drum brakes and older camaro wheels.
I can think of a few problems using the camaro discs like the center hole being too small and the axle flange being too big.
Guess you could use ford discs.
