Default Why does this happen?

Ok i have a 02 Camaro with the LS1 of course and it has an automatic tranny. I noticed that when your cruzin along and say going down a hill you let off the gas the engine starts to provide a kinda engine brake. When i touch the brake pedal the tranny seems to go into a neutral position. I can see this cause the RPM's go down. When i let off the brake after a quick moment the tranny seems to kick back in and i feel the engine braking again. Why does this happen? What's the purpose?

When you press the brake you are disengaging the torque converter and when you take your foot off the brakes it engages.

I have that EXACT EXACT same problem. It's really really annoying, I just wanna frickin coast, not slow down.

I would rather have the engine braking and brakes but there is no such thing as a flat road over there.
