Little bit of TB advertisement
O.k. I'm not one to boast about anything. In fact I almost never mention numbers with the TB's other than the cfm increase. Which is about 200cfm.
Tonight, went to the track and took a TB with me. A guy in a 2002 SS with a lid, bellows and a cutout droped it on his car. Previous best was a 12.87 @ 110, tonight he ran 2 12.45's @ 112. I was pretty shocked by that because the traction seemed to go down as the night went on.
One more little story. I had a customer in CA, who is also a sponsor, drop a TB on. On his G-Tech (which I know is not the most accurate thing) droped .5 and gained 5mph. That's REALLY high in my eyes, so I'm not sure that's going to happen on the strip, but it's good to hear.
These are just some results that I have gotten lately. Sometimes the car doesn't like the TB and there is little gain, some times it seems to help a ton.
Anways just wanted to share what a saw today.

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Couple tech questions on the TB.
Why is it ok to fill in the section of the TB that is cut for the AIC and Air hose?
I know you have holes for the 2 but do they both work the same?
Does the AIC have to work harder(open up more) due to the smaller hole?
Also, I would think the purpose of the opening for the air hose is mostly to help the air flow from the tube into the intake. But that is a large idleing hole?
Do the TBs require testing and re-modifying to make sure the car idles the same?

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Could you set up a TB with the porting and all, except change it just enough that it lowers the idle?
My car idles higher than I would like and I don't have access to PC tuning.
Thanks

The two holes are for the PCV (positive crankcase vent) and the IAC (Idle Air Control). You could delete the PCV if you had a crankcase evaq system hooked up to the headers from the valve covers.
The PCV benfits from the lower pressure in the TB and helps releive the pressure in the engine, which will help oil ring seal.
The IAC basically kicks in when the throttle blade closes. The motor works about the same or less after tha porting due to the plate not sealing as well as it did when there was the rideg in the TB bore.
I have them about 99% right now, so they just bolt on and work. There are the occasional problems but I think I've got them all worked out now. I set the plate angle for idle at a certain spot which I have found works the best so most times now on a stock car it just plugs right in.
Hope that helps.

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Where is the idle now?
What have you changed?
Ported MAF
Fernco
TB Bypass
Lid
FRA
Revised PCV
Dynomouth mod
After the bulk of the mods I developed a badly wandering idle. I reset the computer and did the idle relearn with the TPS.
There are a few things you can do to mechanically change the idle...
What else might I try? Is there a way to restrict the idle compensator?
Or something you could do internally to the TB?
TIA

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Hmmm...
The Ported MAF could be the culprit.
Did you by the car stock or modified?
Knowing what the idle speed is fromt the computer would be nice, via autotap, but I suspect that it's not that.
The revised PCV? What exactly did you do here?
If the computer has a idle speed set at the stock setting, depending on A4 or M6 it's different, then it's mechanical and most likely a larger than normal idle hole in the blade. That or a faulty IAC motor.

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
I see you don't shave the front shaft off on your TB's. Did you ever flow any TB's with cut front shafts and countersunk screws vs the stock full shaft TB's? I think I asked you this about a year ago and you said you were experimenting with it. Seems like there would be a few more CFM with a shaved shaft.

Yeah, I have been doing that for about 6 months now. There were pics of it up here on the forum but since we switch over looks like they can't be found with the search function. That's a standard item that I do now. I haven't updated the pics on the site yet.

Go back to your OEM MAF...
Bret, I'm interested in our TB, do you require a core? I'd like to keep my OEM piece (I'm just weird like that, have my OEM crank pulley still too).

I looked on the site and I didn't see it off hand, but I searched and there it was
Looks awesome now that you do everything. This will have to be my next mod, Thanks Bret!

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Bret,
I got the car stock.
The first time I noticed a problem was after I cut my EGR pipe that goes back behind the TB. I didn't get it seated good and had a vacuum leak. I fixed this and got the idle stable, also no more leak.
I don't remember what it idled around that time, but that was around the time it started wandering really bad, high then very low.
I was instructed to reset the TPS and do an idle relearn. Which I did... I lost the wandering idle, but it has always seemed to high since.
It is an M6
It has the GM revised PCV, it's not really a valve, but has a tiny straight through hole instead. If you ask your dealer for a valve for your LS1, this is what you get now.
There are no vac leaks.
The cables are tight.
The ported MAF works great.
Thanks for your help.
I will remember you when I am in a position to get my ported TB.

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Is there any kind of discount for local guys? Do I have to wait for mine to get ported or can we swap my stock one for a ported one?

Re: Little bit of TB advertisement
Dave,
It seems that your hole in the TB is too big, or I have to do some work to get it to close far enough.
BillWS6Formula,
Thanks for the pics again. I added a different plate screw since that just to get the plate adjustment perfect. I'll have to say it helped a ton and didn't lose any measureable CFM. You got one of the lucky ones with the countersunk screws. Those were very hard to get to work right, so for quality reasons I went to a hex head screw.
