ok here it is a tuesday night i had just got off of work and while i was leaving i saw a 98 mustang i knew from the taillights. i pulled up on him and kinda looked it over and it sounded good and he had a lot of A pillar guages so i got up to a 20 roll and he matched me and gave the three honks and i launched out probably 2 cars or more on him it was an auto i could tell. i only ran up to 90 then let off cause i thought the light in around the corner was red but anyways i ran him again from like 10 a very slow roll but i still launched out on him but halfway through 4th gear i heard a whinning noise he slowly was catching me well i pulled over and talked to him and he had a sohc 4.6 with a centrifigal S/C and it was at 8-10 lbs is what he told me also longtubes x pipe and straight pipes over the axle, and tune but im thinking to be S/C'd and got beat by my stock LT1 he either had serious trans slippage or a very bad tune, but it deffinitely sounded nasty. o well sorry for the long post but i was just really excited that i beat a S/C mustang from 10-120 mph. i think the guy was pretty dissapointed when he asked what i had done and i said its stock with a CAI and clutch.

Good kill to the OP! Early non pi-sohc mustangs dynoed somewhere in the 190-205rwhp range. With the mods he had I'd say he'd probably dyno @ 280 like RedZ said.

Yeah it is.. but it makes them cheap and with a PI swap for around 1300 and some decent cams you could have a low 13/high 12 car for under 7000. I wish I had bought a 96-98GT or 94-95 Cobra as far as a project car goes. I love my 97's top end!

I'd definitely have to say that the 96-98 Cobra is my favorite mustang (very close second being the 03-04 Mach 1). However, I'd love to pick up a 96-98 GT and build it up with PI parts. It'd make a real nice sleeper!

I'd definitely have to say that the 96-98 Cobra is my favorite mustang (very close second being the 03-04 Mach 1). However, I'd love to pick up a 96-98 GT and build it up with PI parts. It'd make a real nice sleeper!
Same here, although I like the 03/04 Mach 1 a little better. I like the looks of it, as well as the engine. And a close second is the 94-98 Cobra. I'd take the 94/95 5.0 or the 96-98 4.6 4v. Wouldn't matter to me. One of my planned future projects is a 94/95 5.0, so I might just have to snatch up a Cobra model. They look so sleek and clean.

That was my plan with the '98 GT I used to have... I actually had all the parts I was gonna use except for one cylinder head and ran out of time and $$$. Ended up just swapping the cams and intake manifold (headgasket change). But I wanted to have the heads ported and milled down for a bit more compression, do cams, LTs, 4.10s... that would have caught a lot of people off guard. :drive:

well all my car has is K&N CAI, GM 1LE intake elbow, SLP Throttle body air foil.
as far as your car i asked what people thought i would dyno and they told me most stock 6-speeds can range from 250's to 260's but i pulled 275 to the wheels so im not sure. but i know that all LT1's are rated at 275 FLYWHEEL HP but 97's for some reason are rated at 285 to the flywheel. but it can vary alot it all depends on how accurate the dyno is my car could very well dyno 10 hp less on another dyno.

sorry guys didnt mean to upset anyone i was just joking. but i dont see dohc 4.6 with same mods as me beating me theres no replacement for displacement all other things equal a CAI only dohc 4.6 will not beat my pushrod 5.7 ford just should have come to play with a few more cubes and then this wouldn't be such a lopsided rivalry.

umm i beg to differ i rode in my buddys 255 rwhp 5-speed GT and while i was in the car he beat a mach 1 5-speed now he only beat him by a half a car but i beat my buddys GT 3-4 cars depending on how fast we go. and even if the mach 1 was all stock i dont see him getting much faster with a CAI only.

I dunno.. I've never lost to a LT1 before and have beaten my fair share of LS1's. A lot of people I find really need the driver mod bad. If I can ever complete my orginal plans on my Cobra then I'll probably buy a LS1 Camaro. Can't buy a T/A becuz my best friend has one and my wife wants one.

Well that tells you something right there... not only do 5spd Machs make more power than your friend's GT has, they have a better overall powerband, and better gearing. So if your friend beat one with only 255rwhp, the Mach 1 driver is to blame for that. A kill is a kill of course, but don't base how you would do against a Mach 1 by that race. :judge:

o absolutely i know i would lose to a supercharged cobra i wouldnt even waste an 03 or 04 cobra's time it would be pointless. i would get killed but what i was originally saying is that all other things equal camaros ever since the 4th gens came along they have been dominating mustangs with the exception of special models such as cobras.
like for example take a 1997 6-speed Camaro Z28 bone stock and compare it to a 1997 5-speed Mustang GT or a 2002 M6 Z28 to a 2002 M5 GT

a M5 mach 1 would not walk me:eyes: at all i dont even think it will beat me with a CAI only like my car i have seen one at the track with the ram air replaced with a K&N CAI and at least a catback cause i could hear it when he ran it wasn't stock exhaust. but even at that it only ran a 14.2 @ 99mph how the hell do you think that would walk me.:confused:

You are opening up a can of worms here, I tend to agree that it wouldnt walk you but I believe it would beat you. They dyno 290-300whp stockish I believe and according to mach1 owners they are dominant over LS1 cars. lol. LS1s take em down regularly but LT1s usually dont, go find one and see is all we can say.

i have a 93 with a few more bolt ons than you and i ran a mods unknown (def xhaust) mach 1 and i pulled from around 40 until bout 95 when i let off, i was still ahead but he was gaining, by 110 he probably would have passed. Those cars have more power than the lt1 stock for stock. Youre best bet would be a low speed roll with a mach

the mach1 stock is supposed to run a lower 13 stock, almost a full second ahead of the lt1, i love lt1 cars, i own 2, but i know better.

That means nothing, a 5spd mach 1 w/ a good driver would kill you. Ive seen them run 13.1's-13.3 stock. Your Lt1 is nowhere near that. Beg to differ but find one w/ a competant driver and you'll be humbled.

I'm sure you haven't, I mean dang man a 13.2 out of that Cobra is pretty impressive for the mods you have. There was a 97 Cobra around here a while back that used to come out and race and he would get walked BAD by my friends 00 SS. The Cobra pretty much had the same mods as you but it had 4.10's.
I'm not calling BS or anything I'm just complimenting you. I know a 13.2 around here would walk quite a few LT and LS1's!

Times look about right for his mods, bad drivers make those earlier 4v's seem slow. Now get some real gears in that thing as get your 12's...Those 373's are killing you:burn:

it raises the compression ratio to 10:6:1 the combustion chamber in the pi heads are smaller. the 96-98 gt's have 10 or 11 (i cant remember) cc dished pistons where the 99-04's are 17cc. so when combining the flatter pistons with the smaller combustion chamber it gives it a good boost in compression

you keep basing everything off of one or two cars. i have personaly seen a bone stock down to the paper filter m5 mach 1 with d/r run 12.9

also...you are comparing ls1 and lt1s to GTs. a 99-01 cobra is comparable to the ls1 and the 96-98 cobras are comparable to the lt1.

Theres not much of a differance in the Sn95 Cobras and New Edge's...Seen both run mid to low 13's w/ a good driver..New edge's have a tenth or two at most over the sn95's. Both can take out LT1's stock for stock.

no way it would take every bolt on plus cams,gears and tune for a gt to beat a mach 1,and it would still be very close

It depends on the race you are talking about. I know a guy that has less mods than I do, but has 4.10s and he's an amazing driver. Ran a 13.2x @ ~104mph. He would probably still lose to a Mach from a roll, but at the track it would be damn close. The gears REALLY wake up mod-motor cars.

with my 4 10s,drs and some bolt ons i rape 2v gts .i ran alot of them and the only one that gave me a loss was my friends.and thats with everything.weight reduction,rear seat delete, gears and all bolt ons and tune.NO way a 255 rwhp gt beat a mach 1.plus we have the extra rpm in the m5.mach 1> lt1

I'm aware a 255rwhp GT with stock gears should never beat a 5spd Mach 1 like he's talking about... just informing you that with 4.10s and a GREAT driver, it's possible to take even a well-driven Mach in the 1/4.

That dohc shit, is for the birds. Especially the 97's. I had one,..at the time, it was my favortie thing. I also went 13.2,...and I was 19. I'm 28 now. I also, went through,..count, 7 motors. Thats six blown up ones, and one good one, that I sold the car with. Nothing against the 4v's..other then ford, turning my love for mustangs to not very much at all. Your motor, isn't that great. Good idea but,...it has alot of issues. Hence, why modern ones,...or cast. Blown motors weren't the only problem. I popped 19 serpentine belts,...on upshifts. I got soo good at it, I could do it on cue. They ended up puting (if I remember correctly) a 99 and up tensioner on the car,...cause the earlier years,...would bend.
Anyways.

Sprayjunkie(member here in my sig) and I raced a modded 2v gt, automatic, a ways back. That car had a blower on it. Sprayjunkie, had a lid, and an LS6 cam, low compression 6.0 heads,...and that is it. Car made like just over 300whp. We WALKED THAT STANG soo bad,..I was really dissapointed. I honestly felt bad for the guy.
Anyways...sorry for the rant.

Think of the Mach 1 as more of just a better version of the 96-01 Cobras... lots of small changes, but the same basic DOHC 4.6 design. And 3.55 gears instead of 3.27s.

mach 1s can be beat by anything with the right set up.just does not sound right that the gt beat a mach 1 and he beats the gt so that makes the lt1 faster than the mach 1.I put 1 car on a auto c6 last night from 10 to 90 but that does not make my car faster than all c6s

i hate when you guys pull stuff out of context I NEVER SAID HE WALKED A MACH 1 I SAID HE BEAT ONE AND I BEAT HIM :bang:sorry that i riled all you guys up i didn't know that mach 1's had 290 rwhp but its not my fault if all the mach 1's i have seen ran slow i guess all the guys i have seen in mach 1's suck at driving. i am not an expert on stangs and i never will pretend to be one but i didn't think they were much more than a GT with a ram air and gears. all i know is that i beat a S/C'd 4.6 GT from a roll and a dig. all you mustang guys can get off your soapbox ill just assume all mustangs will beat me unless i actually race them and win.
When you going to let me put nitrous on that thing so you can stop thinking about bolt on Mach 1's and start worrying about 03 04 cobra's. LOL Glad to see ya already started to race that thing.

The GT runs LT1 times(most of the times slower) and a mach One runs deep in the 13's (similar to LS1's but they dont trap as much). A Mach 1 will anniliate a Lt1 stock for stock and is a good race for a Ls1.

on the spinning run i ran a 2.5 60' (I REALLY SPUN BAD) i ran a 14.3 @100. the second run i bogged so bad because i was so worried about spinning that i had a blistering 2.9 60':bang: and nearly stalled so i just cruised through to i think a 16.0:barf: if i remember correct.

after getting used to the car i would say it will run mid to high 13's a 2.5 60ft just shows you don't have enough seat time in yet. I used to cut that all the time. But then again that track does suck and when your only getting 2 passes in in 3 hours its kinda hard to launch the car good. It is what it is thats why its just easier to street race in fl.

ya unfortunately your right. i actually raced matt yesterday he refused to do the 3 honks so i did then he left on the 2nd honk and he jumped on me about 2 cars but from only 20-60mph i had already caught and passed him it. so today at school all he talked about is how shitty his mustang is and that he just wants to blow it up.
