540 ci BBC TKO 600 vs. LS1 t56 HELP ME CHOSE
I am building a pro-touring 68' camaro and I am ready to buy my engine and tranny. I had originally decided on a 540 ci w/ 9.5-1 cr and about 645 flywheel hp with a tko 600. I am know thinking about doing a LS1 w/ a t56. My main question is what is a good rwhp number for a bolt on LS1 and what is an average of cost to build it. I have a buddy that has a complete LS1 w/ tranny and computer for a good price, but I just don't know what I am looking at paying to for all the goodies (bolt ons). I don't mind doing a stroker kit, heads, cam, or whatever it takes. I'm just trying to see if I can get close to the hp of the 540 w/ the streetablity and MPG of the LS1s.

You will not be able to get 645 hp out of an LS1 without forced induction.
A 454 LSX with some badass heads and a moderate cam will get you close to 645. Call up some engine building sponsors to get more specific.

What would be an guess on price for a build like listed above? And again the 645 hp is flywheel on the 540ci.

last bbc i had was a '69 gto 396 t-400 mild cam bolt ons 3:55 gears
750 double pumper. 11.5mpg on a good day and thats not having much fun
fun got more expensive but gas was about a $1.20 then.
there is alot to be said about late model computer controlled hotrods. torque is king on the street, BBCs are make alot but at $2.75 a gallon looking at the lsx makes real good sense. lsx puts up some good #s
kooks should make headers for that swap and how you go about the wiring could make or break your budget.
a '68 w\a late model drivetrain = cool
keep us posted!!

if you had originally budgeted for 15,000 dollars to build your 540 + tko600 then I would pick up a crate LS7. A cam/headers only LS7 makes 550rwhp, and thats not even a big cam. personally i like the BBC and carb, but if you are driving it alot (pro-touring) to shows and all that I think an LS7 would be kick ***.....as would any LS-series motor.
edit...hell even LS3's are putting down 500rwhp with bolt ons and a mediocre cam.....pick up a crate LS3 and T56 for ~10 grand

I would really like a 427 LS1 with heads and cam, etc. Here is the main question, I could probably have everthing complete with the 540ci and tko600 around 15k give or take a couple thousand (most likely take). What am I looking at ballpark for stroker LS1, bolt ons, machine work, and assembly. I just kicking around the idea to see if it is even an option.
