Generation III External Engine - Ditched the K&N

So I finally got tired of cleaning the damn k&n filter.
Took a little trip to autozone and got me a fram filter
and a pcv valve and a some tb cleaner. I get home
and replace the filter and pcv, clean the tb,maf, maf
screen, and lid. After replacing everything I start the
car and notice that my exhaust sounds a little deeper.
Maybe it was doing more harm than good. Not worried
or anything just glad I got rid of it.
(Free filter anyone?)

I threw mine away also. I went the paper route.

I always had the impression that the K&N's collected more dirt. Mine does a pretty good job. I mean If the filter didnt get dirty then I would be worried that its all getting past it.

10-16-2007, 08:10 AM
Dirt gets stopped by the paper filters better. You might lose 1hp with paper, but the oil in the k&n makes the dirt stick and oily dirt can get past the k&n. You see the dirt on the k&n because it sticks to the oil where as the paper it just bounces off.

I agree with the others. I have a KN, but the owner before me decided to chop up the lower part of the airbox. It sucks up a shit ton of dirt. I was suprised when I saw how dirty it was. Cleaning it took forever.

I am missing the logic here. If the washable K&N is showing dirt with the frequency mentioned - so is the paper element. This is like a debate over carpet vs hard wood. Both are getting dirty but one shows it and one hides it.
I have never understood the mystery behind washing and re-oiling a K&N. It really is not that tough to do.
To each his own, this debate is as old as the air getting filtered.

Saying this not because I think it changes anybodys mind, been running K&N's since I had cars to put them in. Domestic, exotic, track and off-road. Have never had a problem. Swapped my OEM paper back in when I go out on the beach in the outer banks, not because I trust it more. I run my K&N down and back and goop the paper one up with sand while I'm there for a week or two.
Never been one to believe something (either way) just because its repeated on the internet.
Does anybody really think this company would still be in business if they were blowing up motors?

bingo,,,all for the sake of being lazy. Im lazy too, but not that lazy. I only do about 5000 miles a year too, so i dont mind a cleaning once in a while,,,they do suck the air pretty hard when you stick your hand up there, compared to a paper filter which dosnt seem to have the suction. I have both to ease my laziness. I toss in the paper when i'm cleaning the K&N (always take a day or two when i get busy, forgetting and all)
I like the K&N, my pop's who has been a tech on race teams, worked for OEM's, and built plenty of diff platforms has used them forever. Why should I not trust them?

The only downside of the K&N is the potential for the oil to contaminate the MaF. Personally, I use one of the new EA filters from Amsoil. Good for 100k and no oil needed. Filters better than paper too.

I have the Donaldson Blackwing in my vette and the Accel cool blue in the trans am. Both are same a K&N and never had a problem with either. I like having a filter with the oil because the oil will catch the tiny dust particles. I know this from having ATVs, you never want to go play in the dirt with your atv unless you have the filter oiled. Works the same way with the K&N type filters.

I got mine for free IIRC. A guy I used to work with bought it for a vette and sold the car. It's a different part# but K&N specs show the bottom of the element slightly thicker.
It's been at least two years in my SS and it's still like new, fit's good.

I don't know where some of you guys are buying your air filters.
I see paper filters going for 14-22 dollars, I paid $34.00 for my K&N and thats it for the life of my car.
I have the K&N because I know I am always 20 minutes away from a perfectly clean filter.
If Nascar runs restrictor plates to slow their vehicles down..... why would I run anything restrictive in my car??
I DO NOT believe what I hear, I trust what I know personally.
I know I have never had a problem with a K&N and I've been running them in everything for longer than the ages of most on this board.
It has become popular to trash this product and that popularity has gained momentum for some of the dumbest reasons I've ever heard.
- It's gauze
- It's hard to oil
- Its hard to clean
If an individual finds cleaning and re-oiling this filter "difficult".... I'd hate to think what other challenges they are facing on a daily basis.
Opening ketchup bottles, winding watches, personal hygiene.....
Damn these haunting tasks!!! Will they never end!!! Now I have to peel a potato!!

In our bench testing, we found the cotton reusable style filter flow a little better when dirty compared to a dirty paper filter but very close when both are new.
We've been using the Racer's Choice reusable filters with our new 85mm Air Lids and FTRA's and they work just as well as K&N's for a lot less money :)

How come nobody ever reps the Amsoil cleanable filters?
My K&N was great but, since I live down a dirt road, it got dirty really often and kinda pissed me off.
So I ordered one of Amsoil's filters and now all I have to do is bust out the ol' shop vac if it ever gets dirty.....
Fits fine with my SLP lid, too.

Okay, well, I thought that I would fan the flames of what will be a 1000 page thread....
I switched back to paper as well. There is just no way any oil-able filter is going to do as good a job as the paper filters - you can even see light through the small holes in the oil-able type! As for performance, IN OUR CARS there is practically zero performance loss from running a paper one. Perhaps in other cars, the K&N makes a difference, but not here. End of story.

I've never had a problem with oil on the maf or fitment issues. Maybe people are being too generous with the oil. I have 2 K&N filters when one gets dirty I take it off and replace it with the clean one. That way I can clean the dirty one whenever I have time, then make sure it's dry before I reoil it. It would have been cheaper to have an extra paper filter to do the same thing, but I wasn't thinking the day I purchased the second K&N.

A K&N or whatever style filter is not going to make any more power when everything is new and clean. However, test a K&N style versus a paper filter after 10,000 miles or when they are slightly dirty and see what happens.
You can mock up your own test with a fan, leaf blower or whatever. Just push some air through the filters and see which ones flow the best. Simple.
