Default LS6 Block in 2002 SS

Anybody ever heard that they ran low on LS1's during the end run of the 2002 SS's and put LS6 blocks in them. Some Dyno groupies told me I had an LS6 block when I ran 330 rear wheel HP at the Hot Rod Power tour with just a FIPK and Loudmouth with high flow cats. They also said that the blocks were a different shade of aluminum color. Any creedence to this urban myth? Any feedback appreciated. I can't get this grin off my face.

Yes, it has been done. This situation actually began to appear in late 2001. Reportedy, 10-15% of 2001 F-bodies have the LS6 block and 25% of 2002 cars have it. To check fo sure, open the hood and using a mirror and flashlight look over the driver's side head and try to see the back of the left-hand deck above the tranny. A casting number 12561168 means you're in the LS6 block crowd. The blocks are also a duller color than the LS1 blocks.

This info taken from GMHTP 07/03 issue, if you want to see it for yourself...page 11. Good luck!

You may or may not have the LS6 block, but it wouldn't affect your power at all. 330rwhp with a M6, intake bolt ons and free flowing exhaust is pretty typical.

Jack up your car and look at the back of the block for the casting numbers. Mine has an LS6 block.

How can the LS6 block produce more HP than the LS1 block if the LS6 are both 346ci?

I read that the LS6 block is stronger (hence why it is on the Z06 in the first place), and also it has better cylinder-cylinder (I think) breathing than the LS1.

But that doesn't mean more HP. And don't go shooting a 200 shot neither.

ok so some of us have LS6 blocks but we don't have the rest of the stuff that makes it a LS6 piston, heads, cam and valvetrain it's kinda like telling somebody with a 350hp 396 that he has a L88 block it's just a block. also i don't think you'll see much of an advantage from the "windage windows" if you don't use the C5 oil pan.
