I just got a gear installed and know you have to break it in. All I have been reading on here is about how people are driving 15-20 miles, letting it cool down, and then a few more light cycles like that, for 500 miles, etc. Well that isn't going to work for me. I don't even drive my car 500 miles in a year. The only time on the street it will be seeing is from the shop back home (15 miles) and then if I have to, I can drive it to the track which is 75 miles one way, with a bunch of stop and go, and various speeds from 40-65 mph. What are you track only guys doing for a break in? It is a PTP (Richmond) 4.10 gear with the Torsen posi in the 10 bolt, non synthetic gear lube for break in, and then will be switching to 85w140 Royal Purple synthetic. Let me know, thanks!

I drove my car to work and back two days (35 miles round trip) then went to the track and had good luck so far. Bout 40 hard hooking passes and no troubles. I think you need a couple good heat cycles in them and then you can throw some mojo at them.

If its a race car I usually run the car on jack stands until I get the differential up to around 90-100 degrees with a temp gun. let it cool and go make some hits.

I'd put it on jack stands and let it run in gear for while, maybe 15 minutes, let it cool, try it another time, by then they should be worn in.

moser says for race applications just run it in drive and reverse for 20 minutes, let cool, drain fluid, refill and hit the track.

The main concern is the new bearings along with the gear which will generate a lot of heat together. Just dont do any long highway speed driving until you get a few heat cycles in. Run it on the stands for about 20 minutes or so, let it cool, then drive it- you could also do 2-3 heat cycles on the stands if you want. No long drives or sustained highway speeds for the first 100 or so miles and you should be fine. Heat usually isnt a problem in drag applications as much as it is in towing or heavy vehicles, and that is what you are worried about.

This is what I plan on doing. Drive it from the shop to my house tonight (15 miles) and then let it cool down. Then drive it to and from work all this week, M-F (24 miles round trip) and then drive it back to the shop next Saturday (15 miles) and then drain the fluid and put in the RP 85w140 synthetic.

I drove a 65 chevy II with 33x16.5 slicks, lexan windows, full cage, 4500 stall, dual 3 1/2" exhaust around on the street and never got hassled at all. But I had a front license plate =)

It's all in your luck, some people never get pulled over, some turn the corner and a cop will u turn and go out of his/her way to get you.

It also depends on the town out here. I have driven the car on the street in the town I live before and never got hassled, but the town I am picking the car up in gave me 6 tickets the last time for a bunch of BS. All I was doing was driving down the road. I should be fine though, I am going to pick it up at night.
