LS4 Performance - P0455 - Evap. Emissions problem - Gas Cap?

Started the car last night and got a "Tighten Gas Cap" message in the DIC. Got out of the car and reinstalled the cap...no problem noted.

Went to remote start the car a couple hours ago and it would not start. Started her up with the key and saw the CEL on. Went to my meeting and when i left i plugged in the DIablo and pulled the P0455 code...Evap. Emissions failure.

Just googled the code and found that it's likely related to the Gas Cap message...and it's common on Vettes and other GM vehicles. While i no longer have the DIC message, I'm going to inspect the cap on my lunch break, clear the code and see if/when it comes back. I'll keep you informed.

had this happen on my mini van...

usually takes a couple driving cycles to clear on its own...

here's how to do a complete driving cycle in about 15 minutes...

paperweight... :jest: :jest:

k man, send it along!!

been doin some diggin under my car tonight as well... saw something hangin down under the front air dam... was some black tar tape type stuff.... looks like it's used to hold some mesh screen stuff over the radiator hose that goes along the bottom there... well, that tape stuff is off, and that mesh is moving along the hose freely, so hopefully no extreme pressure or hose bubbles form, cuz that mesh aint gonna restrain it... LMAO :jest:

also found a couple loose wire harnesses underneath... that's always nice...

pushed the plastic clips into the holes myself to secure them...

COME ON CAMARO!!!

yeah, will take a few start cycles for the flag to reset (unless you manually reset it with a programer).

Well, this keeps rearing it's ugly head...and my mileage is worse than usual...so she's going under the knife next week sometime. Will let you know what happens.

everything still connected under the hood? no vacuum leaks?? crankcase vent tube still connected to your K&N intake tube?? could be a bad gas cap - not sealing correctly anymore, could be your PCV valve, etc etc...

here's some good info about that code:

happened on my moms vette about a month ago, my dad and i were drivin to someplace out on the eastern part of long island and that message came up goin to and from this place. waited about 2 weeks and it went away

BuffaloSS
11-08-2007, 01:17 PM
Yeah, i've heard that it's a common problem on the Vette.

It's been about two weeks and it's still there. It's never gone away on its own, though...but i have cleared it with the Diablo a couple times (just to get the remote start back). Pretty sure it's the gas cap...hence the error message...but i'll let the dealer do it and feel good about themselves until they start to stumble around on my other 8 issues.

Just got that twice over the weekend ... since I got a "tighten gas cap" message several hundred times over the past year I bought a new gas cap.

Drove all weekend, CEL light is still on ... what next? PVC?

Where is the evap canister on these cars?

Petey.Mcss

i had that same issue with mine except i never got a message in the DIC... the check engine light came on, i took it in and they replaced the cap and problem solved

They replaced the canister and cleared the CEL, but the next day i got code p0440...something about EVAP circuit intermittent. Not sure what the hell that was about, but they fixed it. Since i still have to go back for a couple things that they had to order parts for (windows & steering rack), we never actually did the final invoice for the entire job. I forgot to ask them what the code was for...but i'm guessing they didn't do something right with the canister install.

Unfortunately, i haven't a clue as to the location of the EVAP canister. Good luck Kaz.

I ordered a canister and a gas cap for my 06. I've replaced the gas cap and that did nothing, I will let you know when I get a chance to replace the canister.

P0442 is usually gas cap cuz its a small leak, other codes usually mean something else is leaking larger amounts

Kazmaniac
12-13-2007, 09:28 PM
More than likely the canister is in a fender well or underneath something, no room under the hood.

A guy at work said his brother's Canyon had the same issue, said he got rid of the light with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, so I'll try the $6.99 fix since I can't remember the last time I did it.

Right after 40K, mine blew the P/S high side line; threw an airbag code and now this. Making up for lost time ...

BuffaloSS
12-14-2007, 08:53 AM
Kaz...is that the P/S line that had the TSB for bursting? Did you have that done yet? Now that you're out of warranty (if so) it sounds like a costly dealer repair.

Nacho SS

I keep getting airbag lights too....maybe I should check my P/S lines?

Had too! Quite the work out with manual steering ... no more talking on the cell driving!

Yes and no - mine was not part of the recall, but GM covered it anyway. I have a great dealer, they negotiated it! So props to both of them! :chug:

The line was $63, so I would have done it myself before I paid $800. One of the guys posted the TSB on this site, which had the instructions - pretty straight forward - remove motor mount, clamps, etc.

I don't think the leaking power steering line runs anywhere near the airbag sensors, last I knew there was one in the nose area, the one in the cockpit I thought was inside.

Mine just gave out - no leaking to warn me.

I had the same problem , they update the body control module and it goes away. Also i would get a seat belt light even tho my seat belt was buckeled

Petey.Mcss
12-15-2007, 04:03 AM
so i just got home and i got in my car when i was leaving my friends house and the service air bag light came on

and my seat belt was on.... and it told me it wasnt

so i quickly remembered this thread

Sint3K..... the body control module update takes care of both those issues??

mind you it was 30 degrees outside... and i remote started the car

Sint3k
12-15-2007, 04:17 AM
Yep it also seemed to happen more when i remote started my car as well but did it completly randomly. One time it didn't happen for weeks then started doing it again.

Petey.Mcss
12-15-2007, 04:28 AM
damn.... its little crap like that... it just annoys me that GM didnt at least check everything right when they made the 06's

do the 07's have these issues?

Sint3k
12-15-2007, 05:34 PM
I've had almost every problem mentioned on here except for trans problems or steering PUMP. But EVERYthing else i've had. From wheel hubs to the onstar to the BCM , ISS , motor in seat , battery , and alot more i can't remember off the top of my head

When my battery was going kaput, i would get "service airbag system" on occasion as well. When the voltage drops a certain amount, as you can imagine, those systems cry for help.

i agree with you because my battery went out a couple months ago and the dealer fixed that... before that happened the air bag light came on all the time

and now... new battery.. same thing.. maybe somethins up with my electrical?

Sint3k
12-17-2007, 03:43 PM
My battery went bad way after the airbag crap happened. But the day i got the car i installed a optima battery in the trunk and wired them together so if something eletrical effected my oem battery common sense says it would effect my optima battery and its still working fine. Only reason i noticed my oem battery wasnt charging was when 2000 watts of subwoofer bangs and the lights where dimming.

Petey.Mcss
12-17-2007, 04:35 PM
ah crap

i guess my new battery is gettin fried then

because its doing that again too... lights are dimming a lot with the bass

Sint3k
12-18-2007, 02:09 AM
I'm going to just replace it with a optima , Anyone running over 1500 watts needs 2 batterys at least i also have a voltage meter so when they start dropping i stop listening so the car can charge the batterys. But theres times where i don't listen to the radio so its enough to charge them for when i am listening

Petey.Mcss
12-18-2007, 02:44 AM
yeah thats true...

i still dont wanna have to deal with 2 batteries..

i think ima just get a capacitor

Sint3k
12-18-2007, 02:55 AM
I think caps are a big waste of money , not trying to be rude. Specially if you listen to rap its a big waste. If you already have a amp in your trunk then the wiring is already done for you :-\. Just depends on how many problems you have really , in my old monte carlo i had alot of bad experiences with batterys dieing so i bought a 2nd battery from day 1 i got my monte.

Had time to get to the dealer today ...

EVAP canister is on the fuel tank, not the typical round canister. $271 worth ... a few hoses connected to it.

I'll wait till the weather hits 50 this weekend to get underneath the car - too much friggin snow and ice in my driveway to work on the thing.

Sint3k
01-03-2008, 05:08 PM
I was thinking with the space being taken up in my trunk if my power trunk poper stops working theres no way to get the trunk open and with 2 15's banging the whole car kinda worrys me that it will do something to the popper and no way to get to it threw the trunk :X

Kazmaniac
01-03-2008, 05:22 PM
Really off topic now ...

But - GM saw fit to put a pull strap inside the trunk in case you stuffed a body back there. It even glows in the dark.

Do your seats flip down in the Monte, anyway? I know getting to that safety latch on the face of the trunk is a PITA. When my BCM lost its program when the battery went...i found out first hand how tough it is getting back there with the flip-n-fold and some crap in the trunk...and i ain't that big.

Nacho SS
01-04-2008, 04:26 PM
I think our seats fold down....I'm not sure.

Kazmaniac
01-04-2008, 10:48 PM
Mine fold flat, turning my car into an SSUV. I think that was a cost option.

Dunno about get around that bog 'ole box though ... maybe get a cable extension just in case?

Sint3k
01-05-2008, 08:51 AM
yea i was thinking about running a wire so i could tug on it cause its a real possible problem. As for our seats folding down yes they do i have my amp mounted to the back of the seats.

so my 30K miler is starting to throw the tighten gas cap message a couple times a week and pops the evap code about every 3rd time. New gas cap seem to be the 'solution' to it?

BuffaloSS
01-31-2008, 10:09 AM
I needed a new EVAP canister...it wasn't the cap.

Kazmaniac
01-31-2008, 10:24 AM
Seems like I will need one too, is that covered under the emissions warranty?

If not I will have to wait till spring to drop the tank.

BuffaloSS

AFAIK, only 3/36k coverage.
