Texas Members - selling a vehicle to an out of state buyer

The only information that I could find on TXDOT's website pertained to sales to another Texas resident. For those of you who have sold to an out of state buyer, I would appreciate any guidance that you can offer. Specifically, do I need to worry about the buyer's sales tax liability and what do I do about the license plates?

You own the plates, you can send them with the car or keep them. If they go with the car, there is a form you can fill out and send to the state informing the state that you no longer own the vehicle.

As for BUYER"S tax liability, I would think thats the BUYER'S problem......

I'm sure TX is the same as CA when it come to this stuff and I sold a few outta state...

is the buyer gonna drive it outta state? if so you should probably let the plates go with it, if its gonna be shipped then keep them and take them to your dmv and turn them in.

don't worry about the sale tax, thats their business with their state...

I kept my plates on the '69 and wrote a bill of sale for an amount we "agreed" on for tax purposes.

Come up with some sort of bill of sale for the car. Then ask the buyer to bring their change of title form.... I am thinking you are going to have to sign that (should look something like THIS (http://www.dot.state.tx.us/txdoteforms/GetForm?formName=/130-U.pdf&preference=PDFForm&appID=/vtr&fileID=1233334&status=/reportError.jsp&configFile=WFServletConfig.xml) ). Leave the plates on the car, as they go with the Title of the car. That way should he get pulled over, there are no problems with the police. When he changes the title, he will get new plates then get rid of the old plates for you.... unless you want them back.

Wrong. Sold a car to a person that later used it in a hole up, guess who they came looking for. Well think god I had a copy of the person d.l. and they p/u him later that night w/car.
