When to check gear oil?

Hey guys I have 36,000 miles now just wondering if I should change my gear oil or is it to soon how can I tell if I need to? Because I was told it's time to service it. Thanks

I have a 98 with an Auburn with 32 k on car. My clutches were getting noisy. I changed oil and all is good. I would change it every 20k or every 2-3 years.
