Default quick ? about stick driving

when going in reverse for a short time, like pulling out of a parking spot, are you supposed to fully engage the clutch or can you let it slip a couple of times?

i usually just slip it a couple times to get enough momentum to roll out, then clutch in until im ready for first gear.

now that i think of it, rarely is the clutch fully engaged in reverse..

i drive it as if i were in a forward gear. Slipping for short distances like parking spots, only fully engaging it if im going a distance like leaving my driveway or something.

FYI, if you're backing into a parking space, stop the car and clear you gears by putting the transmission into 2nd before going to reverse. It prevents the dreaded scraping of reverse.

I don't know about you guys but if I fully engage my car in reverse it idles backwards at like 10 MPH, way too fast for pulling down my driveway or out of a parking spot.

:jester: yea i would think if it was fully engaged you would be hauling, at least for being in reverse...

Nope. Must let it all the way out or your tranny is doomed.

I didn't even think you could let it engage completely when parking (or pulling out) without it stalling, lol. That's how it is with my truck anyways.

When I'm at my grandparents' I'll let it engage completely because their driveway is pretty long. Otherwise there's just not enough space.

The clutch has to slip to some degree, but it's not a science. It doesn't really matter, slipping the clutch at or near idle doesn't put much wear on it anyways.
