Default Is this normal?

With the car sitting at Idel in park, RPM's at about 1,000. Shift to reverse and the rpms drop to about 500 then climb back to 1,000. Shift to neutral and RPM goes to about 1500 then settles back to 1,000. No RPM difference between OD and 1. Keep in mind this is with brake applied and just going through the gears one at a time every 2-3 seconds or so.

I ask because at one point the car would die when shifting out of park to reverse...what gives?

What gives is your car is a '98 and is has a PCM operating system that is difficult to tune.

Seriously, the transmission is doing it's job. The engine is struggling to keep up with the load. Going from OD to 1 and back again does nothing to change the load that the PCM sees.

It is stricktly a tuning issue.

Would a re-tune correct this or is this just an on going issue with 98's?

I would think that it could be tuned out, but that is a question for your tuner. I have seen many big cammed '98's have very, very similar issues. Infact based on the description you gave i think yours is better than abunch I have seen lately. Those cars do not even like to go into gear!

I'm having the same problem with my car. A couple of times when i put it in reverse it stalled on me. Put it in gear and rpm goes up and down. The problem started for me a few weeks back right after i put my ss3600 stall in.

Not surprising at all to me. Again it is a tuning issue.

Someone might correct me, but this is my understanding of the condition. With stock converter the PCM recognizes the load when placed into gear. With a higher stall converter the PCM sees an input from the transmission Range Selector but does not see near as much load, therefore it will "hunt" the idle speed.
