Default cam info please

Alright guys, I know this question comes up alot but I have full exhaust on my car and cold air intake. Now I want to put a cam in it, but I'm olny putting a cam in for now. I was thinking of getting a 228 and about 580 lift cam are the stock heads able to hold 600 lift? so my question is does this sound ok for a cam olny car or to much and what brand should I go with?

yes the stock heads can hold up to 600. but the stock valve springs cant. you will need to replace the valve springs for the cam you choose. brand doesnt really matter. i was looking at cams from thunderracing for my car.

are you installing your cam yourself?

valve springs, pushrods, cam. you dont need to mess with the lifters. also you should look into upgrading your oil pump and timing chain while you have it apart.

.580 will be fine on a daily driver. cams will be somewhere around 400. a comp timing chain is around 200. pushrods around 150. gasket set is 80. LS6 oil pump is 150. valve springs somewhere around 200

go to www.thunderracing.com

look around there at there cams and stuff. also for the cam swap if you need help go to

also you may want to look into the correct tools for the job. (valve spring compressor, the tool to support the lifters while u take the cam out, the tool to put air in the cylnders to hold the valves up) once again www.thunderracing.com has a bunch of tools to make it go easier.

Your looking at about 800-1000 for all the parts. And no a 228 will not be to big for a DD. I'm fixing to do a cam and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do TSP's Torquer V.3. Is your car a M6 or A4?

Cam- 359
Push rods- 110
LS2 timing chain- 35
Ported LS6 oil pump- 139
Gaskets and new crank dampener bolt- 45
Comp 918's- 169
All the price quotes are from TSP.

There's a guy on here that sells a valve spring compressor for 50 bucks.
You'll need a bolt M16/2.0 Thread pitch X 120mm long, this will help when pulling the crank dampener off and pulling it back on.
There's also another guy on here that sells a tool that pulls the dampener back on.

Check out ls1howto.com. There's a nice write up on there. Hope that will help you a little.

I ran the 224/228 581 581 112 +2 degree advance XER Comp cam and it ran great. Daily driver, no weight reduction, stock suspension with Hypercoil springs. That car trapped high 118's/low 119's bogging the launch at 3200 and ran 12.0's. High 1.8X 60 foot times, which suck.

I am running a 228/230 114 lsa cam from Futral Motorsports and my car is a dd. It has a mild idle and produces some insane power.

yeah that 228 cam would be nice all around size for a daily driver!
