Is my mechanic ripping me off?
Ok, I just got an estimate from my mechanic for an Instal of my Transgo Shift kit and GM 3.73 Rear Gears, and He wants $426 I went to another shop and they told me it was a bad idea all together because of the computer tunning required, and wouldn't even give me an estimate. Now, I would do this myself, but, have school and wrestling taking up my time so thats out of the question. Any help?

I agree, that is not a bad price. The gears take time and proper tools to do correctly.
The TransGo kit, when properly installed, also takes some time. It is not a 10 minute job, and I strongly recommend taking to someone who knows all the ins and outs of doing it right.
The only thing that needs to be done to the PCM is to set it for the new gears. Of course, some tweaking can be done to optimize the shift kit while you are in there.

ask around...if he's does good work and will back it up, then i would say that sounds about right
you could probably find someone to do it for less, but i'd say 7 out of 10 times in the automotive world, WHEN YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK, you get what you pay for.

ps. what wieght do you wrestle?

I've installed many shift kits in the 1970's - mainly 350/400 TH.
Back then it required you to drop the pan, remove the valve body, disassemble the valve body and install new check *****. Sometimes drilling the valve body replacing springs ect.
My recommendation would be to take the shift kit to a transmission shop since they will know your unit inside out.

yeah but there is a differance between a technicans price and a mechanic price. if you go by the book and you have a labor rate of 65.00 or 75.00 per hour its actullay probaly on the cheap side because i belive the rear if your changing all bearings and cups with a complete install kit i know its know less than 4 hours book time. i know when i set a rear end i do everything including axel bearings and seals and i get 375 to do the whole rear end with no complaints from customers they glady pay that. it just depends on the person that does it.
