Default How much will replacing the rear end cost?

I plan on never exceeding 400whp... but I do plan on taking the car to the track when I can, I don't know if I will end up with an M6 or an A4... probably an M6... when you blow your rear end, is it best to just replace it with a 12 bolt? or a 10 bolt? how does one go about this, is it something you buy used or just new to not be a fool? Parts $$$? labor $$$???

Alot of varibles.

You can buy used 10 bolts between 250-300$$, more for lower milage rears.

You can rebuild the exsisting unit that can run a easy 500, depending on whats damaged.

Or buy a beefed up rear which is 2,200+ w/o labor.

If your not going to race it, and your not going to build power, stock should be fine, given that your not trying to cut a 1.6 60 foot.

I will see the track, not religiously... and I don't think I will exceed 400whp EVER... but I also don't want to be making good HP and having crap times to show for it... is a stock rear end usually just a really weak component or only to someone who hammers the hell out of there car with crazy numbers?

I know someone who grenaded his 10 bolt with a completely stock 01 SS M6, on factory rubber.
You roll the dice, you take your chances.

I said the same thing when I first got my lt1 TA. I put full bolt ons and a nitrous kit and now I have a 12 bolt on order! The 10 bolt did not hold on my A4 once I got over 400 rwhp.

m6=don't spend a dime on it. a4= get you by for quite a while. if you are planning any track time whatsoever, then buy a 12 bolt, S60, or a 9 inch. Bang for the buck, can't beat a S60. most durable and least noise, go for the 9 inch. got a few extra bucks and wanna keep it GM, do the 12 bolt. there a lot of options on all these, depending on what you're wanting to spend.

but like ^ he said... rather have a 10 bolt to sell and a good rearend in the car. you break the 10 bolt after you spend the $ on it... consider it gone. then still have to buy a good rearend!

Buy a 9" with a m-6. I paid $2550 for a custom 9". Moser case and 35 spline axles. Strange Pro Nodular third member with Detroit Locker and Motive Performance gears. The 10 bolt eventually leave you looking for a buddy with a truck and trailer if you plan on having any fun at all with your car.
