Default The Turbo Project has Begun......

Well as many of you may know i have a 87 trans am that i had swapped in a ls1 and it was a cam only car for quite a while(high 10's). I then decided to put nitrous on it, well after only running 1 bottle through it i got a great deal on a brand a gt47-88mm I will be running a 8:1 compression 347. I am also going to be running strictly on e85 and mathanol injection if necessary. I figured i would do a little write up and the exact cost of the entire turbo build.

Here is a list of what i have bought so far(prices include shipping as well).....

-New Headers and crossover(HiFlo Kit) $500
-Gt47-88mm turbo $1300
-New Turbonetics 46mm racegate $310
-New Tial 50mm BOV $205
-New 33x12x4 intercooler $140
-New cold piping and all clamps $105
-New oil lines and fittings $80
-Turbo cam 216/220 .564/.561 116+4 $175
-317 ported heads Thanks to PSJ $450
-arp 12pt head studs $48
-New 60lb injectors $400
-boost referenced meth kit $300
-MSBC-1 Boost controller $350
-fuel system - Sumped Stock Tank, 2 bosch 004 pumps,
1 hobbs activated, -10 feed, aeromotive boost referenced
regulator. $450
-Vic Jr, Fuel Rails, 90 Elbow, Fast90mm TB $650

Total So far - $5163
Total of Items i have sold $4850
Amount over last set up $313

I am going to take my block in to get machined for my forged rods and pistons, I Will be running Mahle -26cc and Eagle 6.125 rods with the stock crank, I have a Ported ls6 oil pump, Rollmaster dual roller, 7.4" comp chromoly pr's, and cadallic racing lifters as well.

Well i started fabbing everything up this past weekend, i got the headers on and turbo positioned, i had to clearence the fenderwell slightly. I then tore down the motor to the shortblock, pulled the cam and everything. I then welded up a bumper support and mounted the intercooler. I will get more done this weekend but here are some pics for now...

I'm very interested! I'm putting an LQ4 based motor, along with a T56, into my '84 Trans Am (KITT build). I'm researching going FI.....I'm leaning towards a Maggie so far, but I'll be following your build as there are many similarities with mine! Good luck!
A quick question though...are you mounting the metal bumper back on the front...it looks like it'll fit behind the intercooler. How effective would that be though, to have an air restriction behind it? If you're leaving it off...wouldn't that affect the rigity of the unibody?

If your going with boost with M6 if your going to race it go with Maggie. I had a M6 on my turbo setup you lose all boost in between gears. Kennybell maybe.

Thanks guys, I am not going to be re using the metal bumper, My car is basically a show/racecar so i really never had a front bumper support in there, alot of guys do stull use them as well tho. Tim

Damn tim that cars going to be sick when its done and it was sick before with just the cam. I just heard this car like right before he started tearing it down and it sounded very sick. Awesome build you have going there tim.BTW Tim if your still up for maybe installing the kit I bought maybe I can get it done before winter but it might be a waste since I will store the car anyways sooner or later.I wonder if you will top your old burnout at speeds next open house since it will have a big as turbo on it now. Damn I cant wait to see that
goodluck Tim BTW my throttle body is all good I readjusted that screw a tiny bit down and no more codes Thanks tim

I want some opinions on if i should run meth or not run it. My compression is going to be 8:1 forged 347 with ported 317's and running e85. I am going to try and run at least 15psi normally and basically max out the turbo at the track 20 psi?? maybe.

And i am running a th400 w/brake with a 5000 nitrous stall now, what stall should i run? I am assuming that this stall will not work at all?

Thanks, Tim

One problem with your build. That is the E85 will choke the small GTK turbine wheel. Small is relative....as it would be fine for 700rwhp on a regular gas engine setup, but small as in it will probably only make 600-650 before it really chokes the turbine side. Going to E85, E95, Methanol fuels is a whole different world guys. The turbos have to be adapted to the application as well.

What turbo would you suggest with my build then? I wouldnt mind running normal 93, i just knew guys were putting down great numbers with it. Also is the gtk1000 smaller than other 76mm units such as tc76 ect? I am looking to be around 750rwhp on 15 or so psi. and would like to be around 900rwhp on a track tune of 20ish psi. Thanks, Tim

Well i have now picked up a gt47 88 since people thought the 76mm would be to small on e85. i am now going to pick up some 160lb injectors and a injector driver. So i have my new motron 60lb's for sale. Havent gotten much done but have done some minor things, here are some pics of the painted intake manifold and valve covers, paint is just rattlecan duplicolor 500degree paint, 3 coats primer, 3 coats black and 3 coats clear.... I also polished the elbow and then clear coated it so it wont ever need polishing, it lost alot of shine but at least i wont have to polish it all the time.
