So I am going to follow your recipe (that you guys have helped me with in PMs a couple months ago....but I have erased them!!!). I am going to o-ring my afr 225s, run a gm mls gasket (5 layer) on my 4" bore 364 iron block. NO reciever groove.

1. What thickness o-ring?
2. How deep do I have the groove in the head cut that the ring sits in?
3. How much of the ring should protrude?

When I got my Dart's o-ringed they stuck out .0007 of a inch. Don't worry about the new 5 layer top metal shim. It will indent to the reciever groove below it.It seem's alot of us go the the ohio boy's for advice. I know i did!

What i want to know about is the trick setup ya got for the coolant system......
I know i got a pick of it on Mike's Blue car here somewhere.....
You both still push a lil water correct??? But thats at what 30 psi????

From what they told me....the ohio boys don't run a reciever groove in the block....just the o-ring in the head.

That's what I remember too from the what head gasket to run thread not too long ago. He said o rings + gm mls gaskets were the solution to his problems.

Sorry, .007 is what I meant. Just the o-ring in the head's and not the block. You should be fine.

Have you guys looked into trying out the new cometic Phuzion's ?? The gasket itself houses the gas filled O ring.

BIGGGGG money, and I heard w2w tested them and pushed water at 20psi or something.

I called cometic about them and they laughed at my application. They said their standard mls is fine for 1000ish whp, and the phuzions are desigend for 2500ish hp cars and such. lol

Ok, first off that was some good info you guys just went and threw away.

O-ringing the head with the GM MLS gaskets wasn't the cure all. But it did allow me to go faster and push less water.

As far as the specs on the o-ring in the head...I'll have to take some measurements.

My newest setup uses a copper gasket. With an o-ring in the head and a groove in the block. I can make 3 back to back 8 second passes and not push a drop...I just push air now. I have an expansion tank mounted high above the motor. That is only half full of water. I don't know how you could do it with a stockish radiator setup though.

phuzions are junk and no where near as good as GM MLS gaskets.


The only new upgrade over a GM MLS is the new Felpro MLS LS1 gasket.

Help me out big guys? I'd hate to ruin my AFR 225s with the wrong size o-ring. What size you all using? How deep do you cut the grooves in the head to set them in? And is 0.007" a good amount to stick out....like the other member suggested?
