I have a friend that will do a three coat paint and three coat clear for $1200. Is that a good deal or too much?

Cheap as dirt...I would expect to pay $7500 plus for a new paint job. Sounds like you are only paying for materials.

oh i could do it myself. But I dont have access to a paint booth anymore and i sold all the spray guns years ago. If that was hte case I would have resprayed it when i first got the car, and thrown 7-8 coats of paint on there and 7-8 coats of clear like we used to for the show cars we painted.

Just do the body work yourself and it'll cut the cost down a lot.

Screw the prep work, prepping a vehicle for paint is alot of work, prep work is the most important part of painting a car, you really need to know what you are doing. Also alot of shops wont allow you to prep and they paint. And for the price he quoted you, hell let him do all the work that is cheap. But like other's have said be careful who you let paint your car, if he is a good friend and you trust his work let him have it, and if it some shop you know nothing about ask to see there work, work area, paint booth etc, etc.

As long as the guy knows what he's doing it is an awesome price.
