This is what happens when you go for 9s on a stock 4l60e and stock block!
Well I took her out for one last try for 9s before the winter and had an interesting day to say the least.
I should of had it on my first pass, I would of packed up and went home but instead I wasted a near perfect run by tripping the timer before I took off. I inched forward while trying to brake stall it and it turned what looked to be a 1.5-1.6 60' into a 1.99. You can tell in the vid it was no 1.99, I hooked and the tires came up a couple inches. That run got me a 10.3 with a trap of 138 with a 1.99 60' That was my 9 second pass but since it wasn't on the slip it didn't count Here's that run.

So I decided one more try, just do the same thing and I'll have that 9 second slip. I line up, 60' almost as good as the last pass and got a 1.64. I knew this was going to be the pass streaming down past the 1/8. Just a little bit farther, I see the finishline, I look down and I'm on the rev limiter at 7250rpm and then nothing. Next thing I hear a bunch of very bad sounds and then see what seemed to be a touch of smoke comming from the hood. Now remember I'm going 133 at this point so it didn't seem like anything too bad so I just stroll to the end of the track and pull over, that's when I noticed I couldn't hear my exhaust. The engine was off and I didn't turn it off so now bad thoughts start to come. I hop out right away and look under the hood. Fluid was everywhere but no damage can be seen from the outside. My breather blew off and sprayed the oil EVERYWHERE! I look under the car, trans fluid EVERYWHERE! I'm sure the 4l60e is trashed and I'm thinking it took my block with it. I won't know for sure what happened and what the damage really is until I tear it all down. Here's the vid, I'm pretty sure you can tell when it went BOOM! And if you check the time at the end, if it would of held together it was a 9 second pass easy. 10.10 @ 133 with a 1.64 60, the first pass I trapped 138 w/ a 1.99 60'. So close but yet so far.

Well at least I have a fun tear down project this winter. It's funny, I almost feel a relief now that it finally blew, it's like I was waiting for it to go after each pass that it built up a lot of stress and now that it finally happened I feel great/relieved. Now it's time to build it better and stronger add more boost and have a reliable 9 second car. I'll fill you guys in with pics and what all happened as I dig into it this winter.

Sorry to hear that buddy but at least you have an optimistic mindset... You're right, just build a reliable combo and don't worry about the darn thing... So what are your plans?? Staying the the 60e or going A3?? Also, what are your plans for the engine??? Goodluck and keep us updated..

haha, i think i see when you went boom! Anyways, congrats on pushing the combo that far. I really think you went much farther than most would have expected. Cant wait to see how the new build comes together!

Well you knew it was on limited time, if it was easy and/or reliable running 9s on a stock short block and 4L60 everyone would be doing it
Sucks about the 60 foot thing on the first pass, unfortunately in the drag racing world no one cares unless it says it on the slip, then a lot of people still dont believe it anyways lol.
I'm sure you will have back together soon enough.

The videos didnt work for me earlier but I just watched them now, thats a shame on the first pass, impossible to say what it would have run if you didnt start the timers and stop but it sure would have been close.
It sure blowed up real good the second pass though, be interesting to see what let go.

Thanks for all the congrats on the new best, wasn't a 9 but I'm still pretty happy with the 138mph.
For those asking about the rebuild, depending on what it looks like when I tear everything apart, I'll be going with a th400 for sure and for the engine, I'm still brain storming but I think I might go a different route than most. I'm thinking about keeping it small like the stock 346/347, just building it with the strongest parts available. Then throwing on some afr 225s and trying to keep the compresion on the higher side. Then put the smaller pulley on the D1 and shoot for around 20psi. I think it would make gobs of power considering it had 682rwhp with the stock block,317 heads and 13psi with a 4.25 pulley.
Yeah, with the 138 trap and the 1.64 60 in the second pass I would guess 9.8 but nobody really cares about guesses.
I'm actually really excited about tearing it apart and seeing what exactly I did. I know the tranny is toast but the block might not be that bad. I can't see any damage and it doesn't look like any fluid came from anywhere except the oil cap. I'm thinking best case senario, it might of just blew a piston ring causing all the oil to spew out the oil fill. I'll definetly be posting pics of the carnage as I take it apart. I should be getting into it this week sometime.
