Default My Aluminum Driveshaft...

Hey guys, just want to get your opinion on this. I was thinking of getting a PST aluminum driveshaft to lighten to load of my stock 4L60E. I have a 2.73 A4 with a stock steel driveshaft. Eventually I will be going to a stage 4 tranny and 12-bolt. Think this is a good plan for now? Figured it would be much less of a load on the tranny compared to the stock steel.

You really need to plan ahead when buying an aftermarket driveshaft. Is the one you select the one you want for the life of the car? Can it handle the power you ultimately plan to put down? Will the rear end you finally use require the same length driveshaft?
AFA aluminum vs. chromoly, I went chromoly. But I took strength of materials in college and went with the heavier but stronger choice. But that's just me.
AFA lifetime warranties, I just don't hold much stock in them, because they won't fix the holes in my car if they fail.

with an auto you could probably get away with a stock aluminum ds outta an m6 or something. itll save you a few bucks and i doubt itll let you down


dont get me wrong though, pst makes some really nice ****. i have one of their chromoly's in my car but only cause i blew my aluminum one to pieces

I think if you weigh them, they are going to be similar weight. The pST is a larger diameter so what you save in metal type (Aluminum vs Steel) your going to gain back in mass.

We had sold a boatload of PST driveshafts and I have never heard of one breaking. Bob

I would go with a stock aluminum out of an SS or WS6 for now and see how it works for you.Then as you increase your power range you should consider going with something better. I have a PST that will be going into my car (purchased from EPP)...it's just waiting on a mate with a new 9" in the spring.

Ill sell you a stock alum one if you would like for cheap.... But I thought all these cars came with a alum DS?

I dont know....Larry at Speed Inc told me that since my car is a 2.73 geared car, that it comes stock with a steel driveshaft. The tailshaft on my tranny broke on the final dyno run after my cam install, and he said the heavy steel DS was the culprit. And therefore he suggested getting an aluminum one.

He's correct. 2.73 geared autos have steel drive-shafts.

I would have to agree with some of the others. Autos are so much friendlier on parts. I think you'd be surprised at how long a stock alum drive-shaft will last with your setup.

Auto is fine w/ aluminum unless your going to put in a transbrake. An m6 will destroy an aluminum d/s with sticky tires. Voice of experience talking my aluminum d/s looked like a beer can twisted in half.

How much would an aluminum one help vs a steel one? Went from a M6 car to a A4 car, so I didn't have to worry about it before.

I dont personally think you need an aluminum d/s. It really depends on how much power you intend to make(realistically) Only buy a d/s once.
