Default new rusty flywheel? repair?

Long story short I left my brand new flywheel out side an it got rained on. Had some surface rust. I sprayed it with brake parts cleaner on both sides and used a small plastic brush (kind you use for bathroom) to get most of the rust of. Then hit it with WD40. I was thinking of using a shot of anti-rust gel and a wire wheel connected to my drill to make it look like new again. Is this advisable or is there something else I should be doing?

How bad is the rust? Is it badly pitted or just surface rust. If its not bad, it will wear off quickly, like your brakes rotors after sitting a few days. If in doubt you can take it and have it surfaced. I would hesitate to use the wire wheel though.

I wouldn't hit it with the wire wheel, that could possibly remove more material than you need to....

Like was said, if it was just surface rust, you should be fine. If it was a bit more than surface rust, I'd have it surfaced.

Have it slightly resurfaced.

Or you could use some 1000 grit sandpaper and hit it real quick. I've done that in the past and had no problems.

Agreed, for surface rust just do it yourself with some fine sandpaper. For even the slightest pitting, get it cut.

I sprayed it with permatex rust dissolver gel and the light pitting went away.
