Default Need some help for a buddies GTO (cam and Heads)

My friend has an 04 GTO and is wanting to do a head and cam set up on it. He has an A4, this car is his daily driver but wants some good power. I was wondering what you guys would suggest? Could someone give me some parts to look for and most likely a tuner. Any helpw ould be awsome!! Thanks alot.

You can go any direction the only limit is $$$$. Does he need to pass a smog inspection? That may limit the combo to 224/224 or smaller. With an A4 he is most likely going to need a bigger torque converter as well.

He is looking to spend about 6,000- 7,000 on the total set up.

This car doesnt need to pass a smog inspection. what size torque converter would i need for something somewhat radical but still daily drivable?

It really depends on the powerband of the chosen combo but for a daily driver I wouldn't go higher than 3200 RPM. But then again I don't drive slushboxes much. Check out ls1gto.com for more ideas on combos.

More info is needed. What kind of power is he looking to get, in what RPM range, etc.

Is anything done to the car already? Such as long tubes, exhast, etc?

With doing a H/C combo the next bottle neck would be the exhaust, CAI and intake manifold. If you could do all the work yourself you can probably do the H/C, LT's, have someone fab up some new mufflers/midpipes, etc.

Heads: Get the Trick Flow 215's. Spend the money and get the best IMO. I will/am if I mod this one.

For the cam give me a pm and I will tell you about the perfect cam for that setup (with TF heads).

there are tons of head cam combo's that work great...it really depends on the power level hes looking for...i would suggest a smaller cam (around the 228/232 range) with a set of ported 243's for around 420whp through the auto...but your definately gonna need at least long tubes and a converter..all that can be done with 7-8 K and your probably looking at mid 11's with some tire (depending of course on altitude etc). with that cam drivability and gas mileage shouldnt suffer to much at all.

There are still a lot of things to be considered and questions/desires to be addressed from your friend.

As the others have suggested if it is his only daily driver then I would suggest nothing bigger than around a 3200 stall, ported 243/LS6 heads OR AFR 205 heads milled down to around 59 or 62cc's, a 224/228 cam or a 228/232 cam, LongTube Headers, catback, cold air intake, underdrive pulley, ported throttle body etc... those are the major mods that I would suggest. These are some of the more popular and proven combinations but it really depends on what he is looking for as far as driveability characteristics, idle characteristics, top-end or low-end power, etc...Hope this helps you out.

so is the 6-7k just for money to go faster or does this also include suspension and other stuff.

i would suggest keeping an eye out for a used FI setup. more power and room to advance with later down the road. watch here and on ls1gto.com and you can find some good deals. there is always some type of supercharger or turbocharger out there. i would be patient and look for what he realy wants.

TSP 224R w/stock converter and nitrous...everything driver for me

runs fine, no surge, idles great and starts great.

picked up 8 tenths and 7mph going from stock cam to this cam.
on bottle put down 500rwhp and 596 rwtq

best it goes spraying only 2nd and 3rd was 12.1 @ 122mph w/a 2.0 60ft
0-50mph is 1st gear for me.

still wish I went converter first so me ET's would be better

Ya, those guys didn't steer me wrong...Everyone else said it wouldn't work but i'm 35,000 miles into it and it's fine for a daily driver...Just need to get a tune or it won't run for jack.

i would call MTI and get one of there h/c packages. cause they actually have a machine shop and there packages are proven. just my .02 cents......

and if you are close enough i would have them do it.....

i went with hpe...... but it was a toss up between the two. i was gonna go with the stage 2e heads x or r cam...... but i went with the megadeath instead.....
but if you look at the customers rides to get an idea of what you want......

I've got an 05 a4 and am going with the HPE S+ cam and a Yank ss 3600. Later I'll add some Trick Flow heads. This car is a daily driver except for in the winter time.
