Default Not your ordinary question about M/T ET Drags

2 years ago when I blew my motor, oil went every where. So I'm guessing that there's a good possibility that oil got on the tires. Also, the car has been sitting on jackstands for 2 years.

So my question, are the tires still useable/safe and will they still perform even though they may have gotten oil on them and they've been sitting for 2 years?

I asked Kevin (kp) about using my 28W's from last year and he said they were too old. I'd just start with new tires, they do dry out and I would not use stuff that was two years old if I was running 9's and low 10's.

Yep. What ^ said. I've found out that slicks have a shelf life of about 2 yrs. I ran a set for 3 yrs and in the last year I had to put CMT(tire softener) on them and still they didn't hook like they used to. My best advice is to store them out of the sun/heat and if you can humidity. I store my new set in my spare bedroom. God does that room smell good. -Mark

Not sure if it makes any difference or not, but the car/tires have been sitting in the garage, not out in the sun/weather. They don't look to be dried out. The sidewalls aren't cracking or anything.

Well I see you're in Texas. I'm sure just this past August it was probably near 100* in your garage (unless yours in insulated and has a/c). Stick your fingernail in the tire where the sidewall and contact patch meet. Its probably soft. Now do the same in the center of the contact patch. Are they the same softness? I noticed on mine that in the 3yr the center was considerable harder than on the sides. My new tires are soft all the way across and they are about 5 month old. -Mark

Just buy some new or used ones you cheap ***. But seriously, you spent all that money on your new setup and you're going to be taking a chance with old slicks? You could buy a set off of eBay that probably have 5 passes on them for $200.

Guys, I'm not trying to be cheap at all, I just want to know if they're still useable or if I need to go buy a new pair. Regardless if I'd be better off, I want to know if I can still use them.

If you drove thru oil which you did because I was there and saw it then you need new tires. Dont risk it.

What size are your old ones?

I had slicks that sat in my friends trailer for like 4 years and I got them free and made about 40 passes on them =)

Mine didn't have an oil on them though
