Default 1st start up after heads/cam swap?

Hey guys-

I just have a quick question as to what to expect after the first start after a heads/cam swap with no tuning?

I fired the TA up today and she started with ZERO problems and idled like a champ for about 5 minutes..

I then shut it off to finish up a few small things I had to do on the car.. Then we started it up again and just eased it down the road and back and it's "running" but it doesn't really run very well at all..

Now, I am thinking this is to be expected, as it has ZERO tune on it and I was running open headers..

Just wanted to make sure this was typical..

Thanks

Jeff

Definitely needs a tune, my car did not want to idle at all after the first head/cam swap. I threw an idle tune on the car with HPTuners and then it ran OK until I could get it to the shop...Now my tuner is coming to my house when the 408 is installed to get it going. Then I can break in the motor, rear, and trans and get a dyno tune. John02SS from a local shop is hooking me up.

Yeh, I'm gonna get a Wait4me tune and then get a local guy to come and setup it up better if it needs it..

My schedule and the tuners schedules just don't mesh yet..

My A4 didnt want to idle at all once warm til I had it tuned. It was a 225/225 cam only setup.

My current m6 car however, ran about as good untuned as it does now! Even had a bigger cam. Sorta blew my mind.

My TR224 untuned ran OK on the road but would stall when I came to a stop. Getting it tuned made a big difference, runs great all the time now.

Hmm.. This is making me a lil' worried..

My car didn't just not want to idle but it didn't seem to run "right."

I drove it down the road and under power it just didn't feel like it was happy.. After I had driven it for maybe 3-4 minutes, it started running pretty rough...
I was attributing this to the heads/cam install.. ??? Is this normal?

When it is cold, it is idling "ok" and seems to rev ok..

Maybe the tune will clean it up..

I threw quite a bit at it all at once..

LS6 Intake
PowerBond UD Pulley
TR224 112LSA Cam
Texas Speed PRC Stage 2.5 5.3L heads

I sure hope it's not jacked...

As long as you double check all your connections and its not dumping clouds of smoke, its probably just the tune.

Yeh, I guess I need to recheck all the connections... It was smoking a little bit...

At one point, it kinda felt like it wasn't running on all the cylinders... Felt pretty rough...

Those of you who are talking about it being driveable, was this after both a heads and a cam swap or just the cam swap?

i wouldnt worry to much these guys arent running open headers i did the same thing with new 408 and if was bad like the car had a broke rod the car was running so bad they because the 02s are getting false senses due to fresh air hitting sensor hopfully that is what it is good luck

Finally got that car going. Good job. How's your dad's car coming along? I still haven't seen any results from that setup yet. Anyways, it's pretty normal after a h/c swap that it doesn't want to run good. I at least you were able to drive it. good luck

I am going to get it dyno tuned ASAP.. It will be mid-January.. My tuner is out of the country and won't be back until Dec 23.. I have sent my PCM out just to get it up and running...
