Question Gas gauge problem?....

I have a Question about my cars fuel ingnition system beacuse I am having a problem with my fuel gauge. My Fuel gauge is starting to give me false readings when i turn it on my gauge tends to go all the way to the full mark or empty mark sometimes my "check gauges" light turns on... only after awhile the gauge returns to the correct mark... I think... Was wondering if you guys can help me get my car back to normal.

i didnt do it myself, i was still a noobie and didnt know crap. i think it was $260 with labor charges.

but i think they dropped the gas tank and replaced the part, along with the fuel pump. wasnt needed but i wanted to do anyway. pain in the *** to drop the tank twice.

some people say you can tear up carpet in the truck, cut here cut there. and your there.

i do not like butchering though..

Most places will replace the entire fuel pump, as they are sold together (pump and sending unit). I had mine replaced under warranty. Stupid fuel sending unit.

I would try some concentrated Techron fuel injector cleaner first. My gauge was pegged to the full mark until almost empty. I was about to have it repaired until I read that cheap gas causes malfunctions to the fuel sending unit. So I tried the Techron cleaner for awhile and my gauge eventually went back to normal. I haven't had a problem since, and I use the Techron cleaner at least once a month now.

Autozone or any auto parts store should have it.

Not to be a dick but is it really worth it to potentially damage the engine to save $1.50 per fill up?

^ agreed, its 2 bucks more to fill up your car... is it worth the loss of power? and damage to the engine?

the light comes on because the guage shows empty. your fuel level sensor is basicaly a reostat? (idk if thats spelled right) that is mounted on the side of your fuel pump assy. The little bushing in there wears and then it gives false readings when the 2 contacts dont touch. If your going to drop the tank, i would just put the whole works in so you dont have to worry about it again.
