Default Block serial number

i have a LQ4 and can't seem to find the serial number on the block, would someone tell me where to look and what to look for. how many numbers or letters am i looking for. i see a lot of numbers and letter all over the block don't know if i'm looking at the corret thing.

after that where can i go to put in my serial number to find out more about my engine, where it came from, what year it was built, etc. some type of engine serial number decoder.

thanks,

wayne

The serial number is the only number stamped in dot matrix form, it's the vin from the vehicle it came out of. It's useless for decoding anything, it's just the last six digits which will tell you nothing except if it's the original for a peticular vehicle.
More revealing are the casting numbers. And casting clocks.
Heres some information on that http://www.automotiverebuilder.com/ar/eb040538.htm
