Default Small cam+milled heads vs Bigger cam and unmilled heads? Discuss

What is better and why?

On one end, you have a smaller cam (tr224 or so) with milled aftermarket heads and a thinner gasket.

The other side has a big cam (ms3, Trak), unmilled aftermarket heads, stock head gasket.

For arguments sake, lets say full-bolt ons, aftermarket Ls6 heads. Both set ups are the exact same. This is for a street car, not a drag car.

Well, those are both quite opposites, as you usually want to up the SCR for a bigger cam that has larger overlap at lower rpm (meaning it bleeds off compression and you'll want to compensate for that).

For a street car, no doubt the milled heads/thinner gasket/smaller camshaft. It will outperform the other combo most likely everywhere, especially in low-mid range, and most likely will equal it up top, maybe even surpass it there as well. You'll have higher compression, a tighter quench, and better drive-ability.

If you still want a bigger bump stick, mill the heads, use the thin gasket, and flycut the pistons for the proper clearances.

Milling adds maybe 10 HP and similar torque. The big cams will add more than that compared to a 224/224 114. For race, the unmilled package will win assuming you spin the motor high enough.

For the street, an SCR of 11:1 with a 224/224 112 +2 will be just a real pleasure to drive. There will be a great idle (you can make it chop at 725 rpm or smooth as glass at 850 rpm), good parking lot manners manners, nice torque and plenty of power to 6500 rpm shifts. Not to mention, if you want more power you can still go bigger, even with milled heads.

The reason I asked this question is because I have the Tr230 and just love it even with my stock heads. I have a custom cam designed that is supposed to make power under the curve but pull up top like a MS3. The custom is very close to the Trak cam, just a little more duration.

Option 1
If I were to get Ls6 heads from Livernois with the custom, it would be unmilled and stock gasket.

Option 2
Keep the TR230, mill the ls6s and use a thinner gasket.

I street race (mostly from rolls) and drive the car almost everyday in the summer.

Overall the Tr230 milled would be better.

The Custom and unmilled would be better frum roll?

Totally agree. I absolutely love my combo & would change it for the world. Car starts no problem even on below freezing mornings. Idles at stock RPM, no surging, & feels great driving around town. I still dont have mine tuned & the car runs as smooth as it did stock & gets exactly the same gas mileage. And my car sees 300+ miles a week daily driving. I can't wait to get it tuned, but I still need to install my intake & do a few other small things first.

I think that is a fair conclusion.

The third option is to mill and go a bit bigger than the TR230 to gain some more power but still maintain most of its drivability. The nice thing about extra compression is that it helps make it easier to get a good idle out of big cam.
