I am cleaning out the oll' 10 bolt diff. So far I sprayed it out with some choke cleaner did the same to the cover. Got some GM posi additive and a new gasket.

The question I have is what should I use for a sealant?

And is alright to use Mobil One synthetic 75-90 weight?


Any other suggestions?

I use Royal Purple 75w90 in mine. Personally, I'd make sure it's a rubber gasket and not paper or cardboard. I've never had a problem with the rubber one's sealing. I don't know about everyone else, but I don't use silicone or any other sealer on mine. Just get the torque specs from www.ls1howto.com and make sure you torque the cover bolts correctly.

Seems like the pinion seal will never stop leaking though.

You can use the Mobil 75w90, too. I've used it with no problems, and I believe it's recommended in the owner's manual.

Other than that, just be sure to clean all the metal off of the magnet on the cover before you put it back together.

No gasket just silicone. that is all I've ever used on all my cars. In fact the instruction with my LPW cover says to never use a gasket because of possible cover deflection under load with a stock cover though it pro ably won't make a difference. I just stick to regular non-synthetic gear oil as well. I tried synthetic and my diff became a lot noisier and it seemed to leak more that usual form the pinion seal.

That is a good point on the synthetic, I did not even think about that. When I pulled the diff cover, it was sealed with a gasket tack type of sealant on the cover side and nothing on the diff side, it was a paper gasket. I am thinking about doing the same thing, sealant on the cover side and nothing on the diff side. As far as the synthetic, I will swap it to conventional at VatoZone.
