Went install my starter in my RX7 and it dosnt fit. I thought what the hell all the starters are the same. Here is the info from the company I got my rebuilt starter from. Says it fits
1998-2002 camaro firebirds with the ls1 engine

6.0,5.3,4.8 powered silverado and sierra trucks

ls2 powered gto applications

ls7 engines

I noticted it says LS2 gto. Well what about 2004 GTO's w/LS1's. I had to buy a bellhousing for my T-56 becuase it didnt come with one when I bought it. I am wondering if I could have ended up with a odd ball 2004 GTO bell housing. So I took some measurments off the opening for the starter on the bellhousing and then checked a broken F-body bellhousing I have. The opening is smaller than the F-body opening. So I assume the 04 GTO used a smaller starter. So I think I will just get a GTO starter. But does anyone know if the flywheel toothcount is the same on the 2004 GTO's as a F-body. Was wondering if they also ran a smaller flywheel along with the starter. Thanks

I had to use the GTO starter in my TA also. I just thought it was a different starter pad location. I never thought to check the bell housing since I just dropped my 04 LS1 with M12 straight into my TA from my GTO. My Textralia flywheel is the same for any LS1 as far as I know. I don't remember there being a seperate part number for the 04 GTO. If you find it is the bell housing, could you please let me know.

I know the bellhousing I have on the car right now is different from a F-body bell housing. I compared it to a broken camaro bell and the GTO bellhousings start opening is about a 1/2" smaller. So no I just gotta find out if the 2004 GTO really had its own starter. I was told the bell housing was from a 2004 GTO. But sense I didnt take if off the car I am not 100% sure what it is from.

The GTO starter is DEFINITELY a different starter than an Fbody starter. When I did my swap, I had some header clearance issues with the starter and was going to use the Fbody starter, but it wouldn't fit.

O boy, I will probably have header clearance issues to then. Is the GTO starter drasticly lager than the Ls1 starter.

No, GTO is smaller. Tooth count is the same with all other LS1 transmissions on starter ring gear.

Ok so all I need to do is find somewhere that sells GTO starters. Do you know if the GTO used the same bell housing and starter when they switched to the LS2 in 2005. Thanks.

Thanks I called autozone and napa and neither have a listing for one. The dealship wants $370. With my discount, but I was able to call in a favor at a junkyard and get one for $100. Thanks

Who knows maybe the GTO starter will give me a little for room for the long tubes in the RX7 engine bay.
