Default Heads only w/ stock cam

Anyone have any experience/knowledge of going to heads only (say a set of AFR205's) with stock cam? Will there be any driveability or other issues to expect?

Reason I want to go this route is so I can drop the headers in at the same time from the top.

Cam would come later.

Any comments appreciated.

Any reason you want AFR's? Might want to look into a set of PRC's over at TSP. AWESOME bang for the buck and you shouldn't have any problems. Will need a tune to get max power ofcourse.

You can do it that way if you want to but, alot of the members on here will tell you that its better to just do the cam at the same time. You wont get nearly as much power with just heads as you would with heads and cam. When you factor in the price of a cam is only ~$400 and pushrods ~$100-120, then a gasket kit, I think its worth waiting a little longer to do the heads, cam, and headers all at the same time. Have you called Texas Speed? They can set up with a heads and cam package for under $1500.

How much would a set of PRC 220cc S2.5 5.3L's make on my LS1 alone? 30whp? 40?

That's roughly what I would expect to see. There was an article in GM High Tech a few years ago about a camaro with Patriot heads only making 40 additional hp.

My reasoning for going this route is simply to make the header install easy and only once. If i do the headers now, I will simply be unbolting/rebolting them again in the future when I do the heads. Just seems like less effort. I can do cam/oil pump later in spring when I have decent weather.

do it all at once, if you cant do it all now i would wait. I think its waisted time taking the engine apart to do it all over again in the spring. I know its different sections of the motor but while you are in there just do it all!

I've seen AFR's make about 40 over stock on an LS1 Vette with the stock cam. I agree that I'd do the cam with it, or just the cam. Cam only usually gains better than heads only.

if your doing heads only and not tuning and no cam you'll probably only pick up maybe 20rwhp. just my 2 cents. is it worth it, yes stock heads flow about 240 / 245 cfm at 600. ported heads flow over 300 cfm at 600 lift. (intake).

Default factors

Yes it's worth it when time and not money is the limiting factor. The whole point of going heads first is to be able to drop the headers in from up top and only have to bolt them to the heads once. Since a cam is useless w/o headers, why do the cam first? Just doesn't make since to me.
