I've been looking for a set of snows for a set of stock '95 T/A's 16's I picked up a while ago. I've been finding alot of them in the 225/55/16 size, apparently a common BMW size.

Anyway, can I safely run them on the 16x8's? These are just for the winter, I won't be doing any aggressive driving on them.

i think they will be way to narrow and will probly be stretched way to much. i think a 245 is the size you need.

just bought some tires that size for the front winter/drag wheels, there were 245 on there the 225's are my skinnies...

Cool, so they fit fine on the wheels? I forgot to mention, I'm looking at used tires...hence the reason for the non-stock size. I've been finding alot of this size tire advertised on CL, most of them are off BMW's.

I used the comparison chart on discount tire. com, they're almost exactly the same height, just narrower.

I think a skinnier tire would be good for snow.

They will be FINE!! This is the size that I (and MANY others on here) run on our 16x8 stockers for the winter.
Now if you wanted to run 215/60 16s the 8" wide wheels would be too much and you would have to step down to stock V-6 'steelies' at 16"x7.5" (or one of the Tire Rack alloys at 16x7).
BTW, for those who tell you to get 245/50 16 winter/snows; they have not been available for over 6 years (IF they EVER were!), and besides you want narrower/higher profile than stock for the ice/snow.

yes the fit totally fine and look like they belong on the rim.

I used 225's on some stock salad shooters on the front of my SS all season long. We got in a bind at the end of the season when we flat spotted them on a track with a short shut down area and opted for 205's. 225's fit fine. 205's are a tad too small and a bitch to get to bead to seat. Even those did work though.

Thanks for the info! I had looked for snows in the 245 size and didn't seem to find any, but I think they're too wide for a snow tire anyway. I'd much rather have a narrower tire that isn't going to hydroplane in slush.

This is actually a priority for me now, as I got stuck in that big storm we had here in the Northeast yesterday. I have the summer tires that came on my car right now, and I had to leave it overnight in a CVS parking lot because I couldn't make it home. There are only 2 roads leading in to where I live, and they're both long, steep hills. I couldn't make it up the smaller hill, I had to back down. Up until I hit that hill, the car was actually doing pretty well, I made the 20 mile highway trip okay, but once I hit the hill I was done for. I wasn't the only one though, later on when my friend picked me up, we saw a Mercedes stuck on the same hill.

Anyway, I have confidence that with the proper tires it'll be okay in the snow, but right now it's a total sled.

Yes, snowy/icy uphills ARE our car's downfall!! Get a set of REAL winter/snow tires (NOT all seasons for New England ), put 200# + worth of sand or Speedy Dry in the hatch area, and you WILL get up those inclines if you drive lightly and DO NOT "punch it"!! IF I was in your area, I would be looking for 215/60 16s on 16x7/7.5s over 225/55 16s on our stock 16x8s. NARROWER IS BETTER in these conditions!!!!!

Thanks for the info. I'll go with the narrower tires if I can find them used mounted on that size wheel, if not I need something that can fit the extra set of stock 16x8's I have. I really can't afford another set of wheels right now.

Any recomendations on good snow tires?

The Nokian RSi, or Hakka 5 <-(I think that they can be had without metal in the tread?) are about the 'best' there is, but their price/availability reflects this.

Any of the better name brands that Tire Rack handles are also VERY good (Blizzaks, Michelin Artic Alpins, Pirelli 240s, Dunlops, etc.).

FYI: Winter snow tires are going fast! Every time it snows, the stock drops. Snow tires are only made once a year and once they are gone, they are gone until next year.

I checked stock, we are out of the Hankooks and we have only 8 sets of Yoko's left in this size. The Yokohama’s are an excellent winter tire. Being in Newport you probably get a fair amount of weather in the winter. The Yokohama's will do well for you in snow, slush and heavy wet conditions. As for the size, great choice. Narrow is better for snow conditions. A 225 on a 8" wheel will have a balanced and effective contact patch.
