 i recently got a pair of bf goodwrench radials in hopes that i would hook up. as i thought, the tires gripped without spinning, however, the car was slower and the engine acted sluggish coming off the line also i ran about 5mph slower than usual. why is this?

You bogged, with the extra grip from the drag tire you need to raise your launch rpm accordingly. Play with the rpm's a bit to find that good point. What spun on street tires maybe no where near the capacity of a good d/r.
I've always been told to launch the stock 10bolt so it has just a bit of slip for sake of holding it together, but perhaps some wiser members will expand or prove me wrong.

Yes hooking hard + 10 bolt usually = grenading it.

traction can also cause your mph to go down a bit anyway. I agree raise your launch rpm till you get just a little slip on the tires for the 10-bolt sake
