Default Long Tube Headers

I am really considering getting some headers for my car. I dont want my car to become real loud and losse the nice tone my exhaust has now. If I put on some hooker long tubes how much louder and raspier will it make my car?

If you keep cats, the rasp shouldn't even be an issue. My headers made the exhaust note more...I guess "racey" is a good way to put it. The car sounds like it's a performance car now since the cast iron manifolds are gone. I'd go for it.

As long as you have a good catback you should be fine. Only if you had something like the loudmouth, then rasp would become a huge issue. I should know.

The hooker cat back I have now has a nice deep little mean stealhy tone to it now. I would really like to get the power increase from the headers. I will definently keep the cats! I live in a very nice little neighboor hood and dont want any complaints on me...would it make my car that much louder and diff tone?

My LT's never bang around (Y-pipe scrapes though!), but as for your concerns as to sound quality; they sound SWEEEEEeeett! I wouldn't worry about rasp with your setup, just don't gut the cats. My advice, don't get SLP's, they have clearance issues and can be outperformed. I have them, and they're not bad, but there's lots more options on the market. I didn't know better at the time I bought them.

Well what a good long tub header to go with? I dont want the top of the line just the avg header. Also how much should I expect to pay for the install?

With no cam & head mods, power gains with LT are minimal, not worth the cash. Stock manifold flow OK with ur setup. Shorty headers are a waste.
If u insist I recommend mid length headers with Hi flo cats less headaches and no banging or draging, some mods to the Y-pipe required.

Yeap, I guess that's about right. And we are not talking Rhp's either. Your bang for the buck bet would be Hi flo cats and G2 Y-pipe. The G2 has 2.75 inch primaries, most others have 2.5 inchers.
I dinoed 18 Rhp with that setup.
Hint: shorten the EGR on ur 99, that's worth 5hp at the engine. (its free)

You can listen to someone without headers, or you can listen to some with them. I just had QTP headers, a QTP Ypipe and a cutout installed. I also had a dynotune done. I gained 41 horsepower. The only other change was a ported throttle body and descreened MAF.

The Dynotune and numbers came from Speed Inc, who seems to have a pretty good reputation.

Using your logic, Long Tubes ARE the way to go, as they will continue to complement the mods as the mod list grows.
Buy some mids now, buy some LT's later. Or, just buy the LT's now and that's all folks! Just my 2 cents worth.

Completely stock - except lid: 13.8

Long Tubes, 85MM MAF and ported T/B: 13.0-13.1

Added tires: 12.67

Long Tubes ARE worth the money. With every mod, the L/T comes into play. See signature for new times on a baby shot of nitrous.


There are a lot of L/T on the market now. But no matter what other people say I still love my SLP L/T.

1st, that's 41 horses at the rear wheel.

My original dyno was 321.2hp with an 02 Firehawk, so it had the SLP OEM lid and th dual/dual catback.

My second dyno was 362.5. That was with a ported throttle body, descreened maf, QTP long tubes, QTP y-pipe, and cutout and a dynotune... just as I said the first time. 362 minus 321 = 41 RWHP. The dynotune certainly helped, but it wouldn't have given me anything much without the long tubes.

I posted the dyno sheet in the thread I linked, so I don't know what your bothered by. Your accusation of BS seems odd considering that's a Speed Inc dynotune and dyno sheet you're calling BS on. Too bad you're in Houston. I'm autocrossing this Sunday in Iowa and would have been happy to show you how it's done. Keep smack talking with no proof and continue to make yourself look foolish at your own risk.

No way. You're almost certain to get 15-20 out of long tube headers, but I'd not anticipate much more than 10 out of those three mods listed

Well the last time I went to the track it was 88 degrees and 93% humidity and I ran 13.6 at 101mph,2.1 60ft, and 8.70 in the 1/8th. So how much would long tubes drop me down to with good weather? Also hooker catback is a good inexpensive exhaust and most of the longtubes Ive seen are like 7 or 8 hundred $'s. Any a little less expensive ones out there? Agin how much should I expect to pay for installation?
