Mobil 1 trans fluid: Regular ATF or Synthetic?
Looks as though this is recommended by everybody. Looked on the store shelf the other day, they only had the "mobil 1 synthetic ATF" is this the one, or is there a Mobil 1 Regular ATF???
Thanks for any clarification. I know people are saying stay away from synthetics in the T-56's.

Mobil 1 only makes synthetic ATF that I know of, and is what I have used in the past with no problems...my stock 2002 T-56 ran it with no problems, and my current rebuilt T-56 from Six Speeds Inc. uses it with no issue either. I currently run Torco ATF, and I like it a little better (if only for exclusivity).

Thx for the replies, just for clarification though, either 1) GM Synchromesh (which is factory fill) or Mobil1 Synthetic ATF??? I went on the Mobil 1 website and they have a few diff blends. I am just worried about the "anti synthetic threads". I may just do the GM refill from the dealership.

In all honesty, get whatever you are comforatble buying and putting in your car. If you buy into the stigma surrounding synthetic fluids in a T-56, that's fine...but if you are basing that off of things you've read on the internet, you may be buying into poor reasoning, since the internet is full of complete **** and idiots, and the ratio of **** to good information seems to be favoring the **** side more and more as time goes on.
Out of the choices you've listed, I don't think you'll go wrong either way. I've heard a few bad things from people about both synchromesh and Mobil 1 ATF from this board as well, so it seems like everyone has had issues with damn near everything out there...whether or not those issues were real or imagined is another ball game where I don't want to throw the first pitch - it just isn't worth the hassle.

And for a straightforward answer:
Listen to the advice from Amber at Six Speeds Inc. Their livelihood depends on their business, and their business is rebuilding these transmissions. The only ATF that I've ever heard them talk badly about is Royal Purple...other than that, you should be fine.

I've used Royal Purple syncromax fluid in several units from T56's to T5's to NV4500's and they all seem to hold up just fine . If I were going to choose between non synthetic and synthetic ATF , I would prefer the non synthetic version . Syncro rings work off of friction thus sometimes called friction rings as well . Most of the time the synthetic ATF works well to cut down heat but tends to lack the needed friction properties of its non synthetic version . If this happens the syncro rings cannot work properly . I've seen this alot in later model differentials with synthetic gear lube and factory traction lock devices .

I just bought some Dex-III Chevron ATF as a replacement (but have yet to use it).
Is this stuff still decent? It is my DD. I don't hardly race my engine (but of course we all do eventually). I also thought Dex-III was the OEM stuff not the GM Syncromech... Am I wrong?

As long as the fluid meets the Dex III specs, you should be fine.

Look I appreciate the responses...but the question really didnt get answered...
The store I went to only has 1 kind of "Mobil 1 ATF". The bottle reads...."MOBIL 1 ATF SYNTHETIC BLEND". Is this the stuff....or is there another regular old Mobil 1 ATF "NON SYNTHETIC".
Perhaps this store just doesn't carry the regular stuff...then I can look elsewhere.
Thx.

And just to head off any confusion, soontobeLS1; the Pennzoil Synchromesh is the same exact stuff that's in the GM Synchromesh bottle, only with a lower price tag. I've also used this, and it was great when warm (even better than the Mobil 1), but it was a little 'notchy', and caused the slightest little bit of synchro grind on very cold winter mornings. So I switched back to the Mobil 1.
