Default Z29r ?

I never knew they made these things until I actually saw one going down Airline/Tidwell today. Went back to the business and did a "search" here on it and damned right these things do exists. All the F bodies I"ve seen around here and this being the 1st one like it I've seen.

Has anybody here seen this guy or is he somebody here? Car didnt look bad, just looked kind of awkward NOT to see just a regular Z 28 on it.

The search pulls up a two year old thread, apparently these things have been around on F bodies for a while *shruggs*

Yeah I saw that thread. Apparently for ~$6k you could get a few changes to a Z done by Mecham and have yourself a z29.

Look at the bottom and you can find yourself a bad to the bone 160 degree tstat for $361. 3.73's are only $132.

http://www.mechamperformance.com/m_docs/z29r.html Apparently there is at least one in Houston....or just passing by. From reading the dead threads seems like it's an acquired eye taste. Doesnt look bad from what I saw close up in person, I couldnt see how it ran because I was in a 3 ton van.

I only think about 2nd Gen TransAms when I see "Mecham". Didnt know they still were in the car business. Arent these people that made the "Maaco Shark"? And I'm not talking about the paint and body shop either.

Never understood the whole thing behind upping the numbers. WS7s, Z07s and now apparently Z29s. Anyone could throw on some mods and start naming them the new T/A WS8 package, the C6 Z1000 package....

Mecham power oval tips. They look good on the T/As, they fill in the cutouts pretty nicely. A little too big for the Camaro IMO.

Mecham T/A and Z29R were far more than your ordinary fourth gen F-body with some wheels, hood and a few emblems. I dont car for the Mecham Camaro appearance ither but the Mecham T/A is a work of art.... IMO. Function came before appearance with the Mecham cars.

The Mecham T/A and Camaro were the top performers of there time. Take a look at the options available as well as the base package. They werent the most afordable cars but they would easily out perform, out handle any other F-body available at the time. My Mecham T/A came brand new off the dealers lot with a full Hotchkis suspension as well as a page long list of other upgrades.

The hood and spoiler were designed with function in mind. The air extractors improve air flow through the radiator as well as lessen the tendancy for the front of the car to want to lift at high speeds. The high downforce rear spoiler drasticaly helps to keep the car stabil at high speeds. The fourth gen F-body also has the tendancy to want to lift in the rear at high speeds due to its air plane wing shape. The high down force rear spoiler helps to over come this as well. Even the stance of the car with the raked front end plays a roll in the aerodynamics. CHP did an article in 2000 on the Mecham T/A that at that time made a dyno proven 382 Rwhp. At that time that was a monster considering it was a new power plant with little aftermarket support. They also reported the car to do better than 1 g on the skid pad as offered to the public.

Heres a crappy picture of my Mecham T/A....
