Default At the Track!!

Alright, Im about to take my car to the track for the first time. I dont wanna be embarrased either, so someone give me the 411 on how it will take place. I understand the burnout pit, i got that part down. then you move up to the line. How do you launch, is mainly what I want to know. I dont wanna end up spinning my tires at the starting line like a DA. Let me know! I have an auto!

Roll a little ways past the water box, hold down brake while giving throttle to do burnout, burn for about 5-8 sec until nice and smokey, roll forward to first staging bulb, then light up the second bulb. Hold brake while raising the rpms with the trottle to desired launch range(flashing the converter), then leave on last yellow light(when you see it light up, let off brake and hit the trottle). Maintain WOT until end of track, swing by the timeslip booth and get ticket...repeat as needed.

Like the guy above said when you second set of staging bulbs come on bring the rpms up a little bit. If you have a stock stall converter expect not to leave at 3k rpms, you'll just be sitting there doing a line lock. I had a 95z28 with factory stall converter and I couldn't leave much above I'd say around 1500-1800, maybe that's even pushing it, it was quite some time ago and that was the first car I ever took to the track. But anyways I brang the rpm's up the best I could and could feel the tires starting to break loose ever so slightly. But don't worry, after you get the hang of it and the feel for the car it will be a breeze. It's kinda nerve wracking your first time cuz everyone is watching but all goes away after the first time down the track. It won't even bother you the second time around.

Oh...btw, turn off TC if you have it. My 2000 TA didn't , so I didn't have to worry about it. The vette has it, but I run with it off and AH on. AH only kicks in if you're 11/10ths sideways.

Better yet, drive around the water box. Don't go through it...period...assuming you're on street radials. You'll screw up traction for everyone else because you'll be leaving water all over the place.

Just do a light burnout to clean the tires off. Heating up street radials
tends to make them greasy, not sticky.

I agree with everything else.

yeah go around the water box like unit213 said. the track should hook 100x better than the street, just punch it off of the line and see what happens!

While I partially agree with that statement, I have to say that some radials respond very well to a smokey burnout. Warm rubber sticks better than cool rubber. Yes,some radials have issues being worse when heated(GS-D3s come to mind). As for the water box theory, if you drive far enough past the water(but through it.)you won't sling water everywhere and it'll provide a good way to start your burnout without harming your tires as much. Some radials will "chunk" when doing a dry burnout on a prepped track.(chunk=pieces of your tire being "ripped" from it due to the stickiness of the track when burning out, doesn't happen on the street or unprepped surfaces usually). There is alot of theories about water box techniques, so try a few of each when you get a few runs under your belt and find what works best for your car and tires.

Here was my technique in my 2000 A4 Z28. Keep in mind that I was
running street radials (Kumho Ecsta 712's) on stock 16" wheels:
  • Drive around the water box.
  • Back up enough to create some room (don't back into the water box).
  • Do a light burnout for 2 seconds or so just to clean the tires off.
  • Light the first bulb.
  • Let your opponent stage.
  • Light the 2nd bulb...but just barely light it up.
  • Keep your left foot on the brake.
  • Keep your right foot on the gas pedal.
  • Bring the rpm's up and flash the converter a bit (~1500rpm).
  • On the 3rd yellow (sportsman tree) roll into the throttle aggressively.
  • You should be at WOT by the time you count "one one-thousand".
  • Keep the gas to the wood past the finish line (don't let out early).
With the following mods, that technique got me 11.50's @ 121mph on
1.8 60' on street tires:
  • MTI lid
  • Hooker Catback
  • Free mods (TB bump stop mod, !FRA)
  • Nitrous
Find what technique works best for you.

Again, whatever that technique is...don't leave water on the line for
those of us running big tires.

Best of luck.

I agree...thats one part I forgot, but it's also one piece of advice I didn't get until about my 3rd or 4th year racing. It helps improve 60ft, kind of a small"running start" and saves you from redlighting . Good input!

That is exactly right! I don't know exactly the distance available
for that "running start", but it does exist...and every inch counts.

I was given this piece of advice from a good friend of mine.
I tend to listen when he tells me something. Here's his car: vid

Thanks. It was a real sleeper that's for sure...stock 4x4 ride height
and everything. I beat that car hard and she just kept begging
for more. Gotta love LS1's.

In naturally aspirated trim, it went 13.0 @ 107mph on a 2.0 60'...once trapped
111mph but I don't believe it since I never backed it up. I never did catch
a good short time N/A. It had a 12.85 in it for sure.

Keep in mind that my car was had a 4L60E (easier to drive) and it was
a Z28 with few options. It wasn't a stripper car, but it was pretty light
all things considered.

Good luck dude. My first time out I ran a 14 something on street tires spinning for about 3 seconds. My best pass of the night was a 12.5 and I was still spinning. I went around the waterbox and slightly put the rears in and burned out after. You will get the hang of it and after doing it once you won't want to stop.

your trap is really good for running 13 flat, yea for the A4 the most important is the launch, i was still using the stock shifter, so my shifting was not so great at all! but 12.8 is alot better then i would expect from your car. your numbers are very impresive to me, im still amazed!

I made hundred and hundreds of passes. You tend to figure things out
after a while.
