i got a system hooked up an think it killed the alternator. i want to get a stronger one for that an everything is power on my car.

First make sure your power steering isn't leaking...that killed one of my alternators.

I'm not sure about the Powermaster 150 amp...I had a 160 amp from Afterthoughts Auto (I have no idea who built it though), and it was okay, but I had to bump the idle up to 900 RPMs before it would turn on (but that is kinda par for the course with an aftermarket, higher output alternator). Hopefully the Powermaster would be a little better, but you never can tell.

I will tell you, though, that I just ordered a 200 amp alternator from Alterstart (through their Ebay store), and I'm pretty excited about it. They provide an output sheet with each one, so you can see what it puts out at each RPM, and it also uses a completely different back (no cooling duct like the stocker). I've seen a few of their output sheets, and it looks like they turn on at a fairly low RPM, so that is good (since most people can't adjust their idle speed like I can with my own tuning software). Plus, it has a 2 year warranty. There was no warranty written or implied with the 160 amp I bought, so I was out some money when it went.

Oh, and before I forget, if you get a higher output alternator, it is a VERY good idea that you replace the cable from the alternator to the battery...the stock wiring is small.

Are you using a capacitor? Thats usually the problem I saw when I worked at autozone, dudes running 2000 watt systems on a high Amp alternator, but no capacitor, which even with a high amp alternator will cook your system.

I am going to vote no on the powermaster alts. And here is my reason..

On my old firebird my system on a stock alt would drop the voltage down to around 9-10 volts with everything running. I purchased a powermaster and it worked great for about 3 months then took a crap. I purchased a new AC Delco alt and tried that, worked like a charm. Just my 2 cents

well this is what i was planning on doin. i have an old 1.0 cap. but not sure if its still good an rather get a new one.

plan is to get new 150amp alt.
an a new 1.0 cap for the system.
this is the third alternator in the car but i just got the system hooked
up in the car so im just tired of seeing the volts drop an replacing them.
its not hard but rather spend money on something else for the car.

also since the alternator is weak would that cause the car to throw any codes.
its 28 outside also. i had p0135 an p0155. i read it could be from the cold weather. thanks for any advice. i been having a lot of small problems with the car an getting feed up.

I have a Powermaster brand starter and it is good quality. I would think the alternator is good quality too. But, the customer service guys are bad news.

^^ To the people who said caps don't do anything, why do you say that? An alternator is not designed to take heavy loads over and over with a system hitting. Capacitor is like a temporary battery.
