Default Cam install- Have a question about the oil pump

We are installing a cam on my buddies car and he did not buy an oil pump. He wants to know about modifying the stock pump. Possibly porting it and shimming spring. Do you guys know if this would be a good idea or should he just get a new pump or keep the stocker how it is? If there this could be done on the stocker is there any good write ups also?
Thanks

I would recommend a new one, they are fairly inexpensive. No sense taking any chances with such a critical component.

Depends on the year, the earlier pumps were prone to issues. If it is an earlier pump, pick up an LS6 pump.

Its a 01 WS6 built in 09/00. The valve seats did not have the seals built in like the later styles do i know that. He is getting the new o-ring for the pickup also.

^^^Im with you

These pumps sometimes go out, and it never hurts to have better oil pressure to go with the additional horses

Melling stock replacement oil pump with blue spring - 55~60psi at idle. $120 give or take a few shipped from Scoggin Dickey. New o-rings included.

Melling makes the best oil pumps period.

Can't beat it.

If your in there spend the money and change it. My buddy had a bolt on fbody and the moment he pulled it on the dyno the pump went out. After he took it out he found the spring was the problem. His car was a 2000.

Thanks John for posting this thread. Well the new cam is in its time for the timing chain. I am still deciding whether or not to buy a new pump I guess I may as well and get one. Also has anyone heard of having to grind the timing cover with a double roller timimg chain?

funny you ask that yes you will have to grind the cover with a double roller...at least a rollmaster anyways...i had to grind it in like 4 spots with a cutoff wheel...just mock it up and move it back and forth to scratch the inside some then you will know where to take off the material...2 hit the pump and one hit the chain...i took the center bumb down just for precaution...when you mock it up to make the scratches dont use a gasket...hope this helps...
