Default 3.42 swap to 4.10?

i was wandering, my 99 z71 ext cab has stock 4.10's and my '00 m6 ws6 has stock 3.42's, can i swap these two from one another, or would that be a bad idea? wouldn't i get a little better gas mileage out of my z71?

Truck 10 bolt is 8.5"
F-body 10 bolt is 7.5"

Just curious though, does the Z71 have 4WD?

prolly not good idea to have a 3.42 rear gear with the stock 4.10's in the front still, shouldnt work anyway with the size diff

thats what i thought, so if you swap the rear your 4WD becomes useless unless you swap the gears in the front too

chevrolet/gmc's dont have front axle, they did away with that set up years ago. only company that still does that is dodge. independent suspension in the front, axle in the rear. the 4wheel drive is engaged by the transfer case, not like the old style where there would have been a 10 bolt in front and 10 bolt in the rear.

I picked up 4 tenths from 3.42s to 4.10s in my old 6spd. Well worth the swap if you decide to change, but just buy the gears new.

yeah i understand that, but it's not like the rear end gears. theres not like a 4.10 gear set in the front. the newer fords and gm 4wheel drives are on a different set up than the old style like you were reffering to where there were 2 axles.

if you have 4.10 gears in the back of your truck you have 4.10 gears in the front of your truck. When the transfer case is in 4WD mode both ethe front and rear yoke spin the same RPM's. The gear ratio in the front and reat differentials must be the same to have both the front and rear axles spin the same RPM.

Old school straight axle is what you are thinking of but the newer truck, even though it is and IFS frontend still has a ring and pinion to match the ratio front and back.

And no Z71 will not work in a Camaro. Two totally different rearends.
