Default New SBC wont start

Im not a noob, but im having problems getting my motor started.

It has world iron eagle heads
Keith black 113040-8 pistions 11.8:1CR
eldelbrock performer rpm cam
***adjustable timing set***
roller rockers
blah blah blah

So i replaced the pistions and i have built several other motors, and i installed a new cam. The old cam was too agressive and solid lifter so i replaced with the edelbrock set up. The engine cranks but flames out the carb randomly. but doesnt even to sputter to sound like it will start. I checked the distributer (mallory HEI) and checked for spark at each plug, Spark is ok. i checked firing order, order is ok.

The only thing i can think is that the HEI is bad some how?? or the timing set was not set at 0*. will this cause it not to start at all? the cam is supposed to be set straight up

thanks

When you put the engine together, were you careful to keep the dots on the timing set lined up (6 o'clock/12 o'clock)? If so, you're actually firing on cylinder 6 and the distributor is 180 out (if it's set for cylinder 1). The first three small blocks I ever put together had this issue. I was careful to keep the timing set lined up and they all backfired out of the carb and wouldn't run, etc. It's a common mistake and I'm just thinking out loud, but I'm guessing you might have done the same thing.

I did that on the 1st engine i built.

I lined up dots on the cam to face each other. I double checked TDC and made sure both rockers werent under tension. then i stabbed the DIST to cyl 1.

I really want to figure this out w/o taking off the timing cover and intake...

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you're saying correctly. If I'm reading it right and you have the dots facing each other (like you line up the timing set the top one at 6 o'clock and the bottom one at 12 o'clock), you're on cylinder 6. Turn the rotor 180 degrees and set the distributor back down in there. I think you're telling me that you're 180 out (if I read your post correctly).

If both rockers aren't under tension, you should be on cylinder 6. Both rockers should be "even" (and closed) for you to be firing cylinder 1.

Watch the valves to see when you should be firing cylinder 1. Also the over-tightened valve theory is very possible.

Well i over adjusted the valves. The lifters are much different than any others i have used. they require almost no preload, kinda weird...

thanks for the help guys. here's what the motor is in.
Its was a 92 toyota pick up, equal length i beams. 9" w/35 spline & 5.43's, 3 linked rear with 3.0 bypassed all around and 2.5" coilovers. 19" travel front. 26" rear.

Here is some pics of our other truck with a LS1 we won the MDR championship last year in class 1400

You need more travel. 19" isn't enough! j/k looks like a lot of fun!

Thats what I was going to say too. Could be 180 degrees off.

I have hydralic lifters, what rule do you guys use, go half turn or 3/4 turn on them when adjusting them? I bring em out till they knock a bit, then take the knock away, then from there I go 3/4 of a turn.

no im not racing corr. my truck would do horribly on a short groomed course. and more than acceptable amounts of body roll. although it would be fun to run a few laps
