You mean retainers? For the most part locks are locks, but they wont change the installed height.

That's kind of a trick question. Yes, some vendors offer +.050" locks. The trick is determining if you will actually get an additional .050" out of the locks. You almost have to measure the installed height with both locks to see how much additional height you will get. There is a tool that is used to measure the height your looking for. It's a micrometer that looks like a valve tip. You install the locks and retainer you would like to use and it gives you a reference measurement. Change the locks or retainer and measure again, compare the measurements to determine what the different part will do to installed height.

Here's an example from the Dart 225cc head install that I completed 2 weeks ago.

I had the Crane 144833 spring/retainer/lock kit on my stock heads and wanted to use these on the Darts. I got different installed heights when I used each vendors (Dart and Crane) locks on the same valve with the same retainer and spring seat. The difference was .025" taller installed height using the Dart locks. So I ended up using a combination of Dart and Crane valvetrain parts to get the installed height I needed.

Bottom line, it's a crap shoot how much installed height you will actually get from +/- .050" locks unless the reference and new locks are from the same manufacturer.

Clear as mud?

The locks are from AFR that came with the head......
