Arrow Time to Start Modding at 85K, Need help w/Cam and Heads for DD

I have a 2002 Camaro SS 35th LE Vert w/M6 and the 345HP SLP package. The car just hit 85K miles and I have 1 more payment before the car is 100% mine. So I figure it is time to start the modding process.

Currently the only performance modifications that have been made are to the exhaust. I have the GMMG mated to the CME tips with an SLP Y-pipe and gutted cats(sounds pretty wicked but like the GMMG better w/cats).

A brief history about the car; it has been a bad year and within the past 6 months I have gotten a new water pump, tranny mount, new clutch(OEM), slave and master cylinder, T-56 rebuild including new input shaft, and all the seals on the rear engine replaced(crank cup plug as well).

When the water pump was replaced in July, the radiator was tested and show a 20% loss efficiency loss in thermal test. The shop told me that this meant that the radiator had some restrictions but it should make it through the summer. However, they recommended replacing it before the next summer. So, I am planning on doing that in the coming months. Also, when they were sealing up the rear engine leak they noticed coolant seapage/corrosion on the heads by the intake manifold. They said it is not leaking at this point but obviously will be at some later point.

Therefore while I am getting the new radiator and the coolant leakage at the heads fixed; I figured it would be a good time to start the modding process.

My goals are to get as much of an increase in horsepower as I can without having to do severe modifications to other parts of the car to handle the increased HP. The car is a daily driver where I am putting about 2000-2500 miles per month on it; so I driveability is a huge issue. I am not planning on taking the car to the strip or even racing it; just want the thrill of being fast if that makes any sense.

My plans thus far are to add QTP headers, QTP Y-pipe w/cats, heads and cam.

What heads and cam package would you recommend for those goals? Keep in mind I am looking more for power at the lower RPM's as most of my driving is city driving.

Is there anything else you would recommend me doing while I am at it? I plan on 3.73 gears some time at a later date.

Im running a set of patriot stg 2 heads and a trick flow camshaft, I made some decent numbers with this combo, and I daily drive as well. Other mods are in the sig. I would recommend this setup to anyone.

You might check out our PRC heads cam packages we're putting together some special pricing for you guys in the next few days so keep your eyes open. You can definately gain approx 100rwhp while still keeping good driveability!

Find a set of 243 LS6 heads are good upgrades if you dont want to spend a lot of money because thats what I have on my car are stock 243 heads and just do your research on cams, decide a goal on performace your looking for (homework). And as far as drivability is all in the tune when you get all the parts on it will have all to do with how DD it is. The Trick Flow heads as casted are what I am planning on buying soon, Ive seen great performance gain in person. Good Luck

I gained 60rwhp alone on my Torquer 2 swap (dyno in sig). Now I'm planning on some PRC 5.3 stg. 2.5's from TSP, .040 cometic gaskets, along w/ milling .025 and flycutting. I know it sounds kind of like a pain but it'll really wake up my cam w/ the better quench, and the driveability of the cam alone is great! I drive 350 miles/wk. w/ most being city (light to light) and I couldn't be happier. Still get around 20-city and 27-28-ish hwy.

If daily driving and low RPM power are concerns, I would suggest a set of AFR 205's over ported stock castings. Most of them end up at 220 to 230cc, so air speed in the ports suffers over a smaller port. That's going to cost you precious lb-ft right where you use it most. Spend the money you were going to use for 3.73's on the heads, and select a mild cam like the AFR 6018 (220/224 .581/.581), and you'll be much happier.

Avoid the bigger cams over 224* duration and you'll have a more efficient package that works better in a daily driven car.

I love my combo that I got from texas speed, 2.5 stage heads with the ms3 cam. With a good tune its a great DD. Plus you have to love everyone looking at you at the redlights, and it puts out some great numbers. JMO tho. Good luck.

Its decent, nothing to crazy as far as the lopeyness, I take it up to 6500 when Im racing but, on the street I only take it to 6000 tops.

If you're not really on a budget I'd get the afr 205's and mill them down to 62cc use a cometic .040 gasket and the F13 cam on a 112 (230/232 .595/.585). However, Patriot is coming out with a new head called the Predator in February you'll be able to get in a 200cc version that appears to flow right with the afr's and 5cc less. They are slated for $1795. Good Luck on your search!
