Default help me spool faster

i have a 04 gto with a sts kit and a tc76mm .96ar housing turbo on it. i picked the system up used and this is the turbo he had on it. what can i do to help it spool faster as my next mod. what would help more, a cam, victor jr intake, changing the ar housing to a .81, or what? or would a combination of any would be better?

i definately think a .81 housing would help your low end spool but you will loose some up top power. is the exhaust wrapped from manifolds to the turbo? if not wrap that pipe. a cam like the one TRT has put on the STS really makes good power. contact them and they can give you specs on the cam. are you running headers or manifolds, manifolds would help you retain some heat and spool faster also. good luck

Do you have the stock manifolds or long tubes? If you have long tubes change them out for the stock manifolds they will help you spool faster. Are the exhaust pipes to the turbo wrapped with header wrap. This will keep the heat in the pipe and also speed up the spooling process.

A .81 a/r housing should help, but a stalled auto trans would help even more.

changing housings will have the effect of changing rear end gearing if you have ever experienced that. It will come on sooner but die alittle sooner as well. What you basically do is since its comes on so hard so soon, you wont have to rev the **** outtta it to make power, then you'll shift sooner and keep the engine out of trouble (by trouble i mean high rpms) That kills alot of things: drivetrain, valvetrain, etc etc I'd just try to boost it up alittle higher and see if the turbo reacts to more boost. Some turbos "wake up" when they boost more. BIG turbos on low boost dont hit nearly as hard as a matched up turbo boosting (turbos have sweet spots) and your's will probably have that sweet spot in the 13psi and up range.
Dont know if any of that made sense but yea thats what ive gotten from the info ive read and experiences ive had

and back on topic to answer your question, out of the items you listed yes the smaller housing will help spool the most, and it wont be as bad up top as you think. It will still make "good" power to 6000rpm. I tried the same thing one time but instead of going from .96 to .81 i went straight to .68 like a crazy ***. It spool GREAT(i had headers no wrapping or nothing so imagine) but it would die off alittle like around 6200. The .81 in a sts kit i think would be perfect actually now that i go back and remember how my car was running on that .68
Good luck with it post up results when or if you make changes

I have the same turbo out back. Still have the long tubes and yes it is wrapped to the turbo. Auto with a 2500 stall. I have like a 1.06 housing so it spools pretty slow. I also have 20" street tires out back and 3.23 gearing. Engine is forged so 15 pounds is not a prob. Unforturnately she has nothing in 1st till about 4 g's then it starts to spool, not spooled, starts to spool. Right now I'm installing a 75 shot of nitrous to eliminate that prob. Stary tuned for updates.

Not gonna stress this enough, you're "problem" is a variety of things. I say dont use nitrous when you can fix your setup to run properley ALL the time. Switch to stock exhaust manifolds (headers) and a 2.5" y piipe and wrap headers and y pipe all the way to the turbo. Next is change that housing to a .96 to help spool, it will still have killer top end and trust me it WILL see boost in first gear. Auto's load up turbos alittle better than sticks so im 200% positive you will be VERy impressed with your car when you do these things. Taking these steps will actually feel like you're spraying the car with a 75 shot all the dam time i dont know why people just dont get it. Honestly i made the same mistakes when i did my custom rear mount and i can tell you its a night and day difference with stock manifolds and wrap. The .96 or even .81 will KICK that 1.06 housings *** as far as spool and performance goes. Save your money, save yourself 4 or 5 headaches and change your setup like i said. ZOMBIE on here is also the man at rear mounts, he will tell you the same exact thing.

do you have 2.5" exhaust from the manifolds to turbo? if not, reducing to that will help your spooling...
