I need some help. I bought a set of Bfg drag radials (size 275-40-17s) in September from Discount tire. I was washing my car today and noticed very bad cracks above the lettering on one tire. These tires only have about 3,000 miles or so on them. I went to Discount and they said they can't warranty the tire. These tires are almost brand new. When you look at this tire on Discounts web site it has a 1 year or 25% materials and workmanship warranty but discount wont honor that. My brother has gone through 2 sets of tires like these and has had no problems. Obviously it is a material problem. What should I do? Has anybody else had this problem?

I had it printed out when I went but they said all they could do is prorate the tire. It hasnt been a year and I havent used 25% of the tread so I think it should be covered under the materials part of the waranty. I went to the Discount tire that I bought them from so I guess I should try another. My only other option is to call Bfg directly but I'm not sure if that would work.

It sounds to me like temperature cracking. Softer competition tires like BFG Drags, Nitto 555R, 555RII, NT01, Falken RT615, Kuhmo Mx use specialty rubber compounds designed to work the best at higher temperatures. This is why people heat cycle them and burn out before a launch. The downfall to tires like these is that cold temperatures can damage them. Nitto released a statement for proper cold weather storage for their RT and Drag radials that said the RT and Drag Nitto tires should not be exposed to temperatures under 32 degrees F (I personally wouldn't push them much below 40F to be safe). During the winter they should be stored in a dry area above 32 degrees F and kept inflated to 1/2 the normal running pressure. Cracking under these conditions is not a manufacture defect and Nitto will not replace tires damaged to what they see as improper care. - most other manufactures won't either. You are responsible for maintaining proper care of your tires.

ya, if they prorate your tires feel lucky, weathercracking is not covered under warranty and I have never been able to prorate tires due to it.

These tires havent seen temps below 40 degrees. My car stays in the garage most of the time. I talked to Bfg this morning and they said try another Bfg dealer for replacement. They also said it should be covered under warranty so I will see what happens. Thanks for the input.

If you drove your car this morning to work chances are it saw close to that Austin shows 35 degrees this morning at 6am according to weather.com but reguardless of this if BFG says your tires should be covered, that should help you out. Good luck with them and drive safe. BFG tires are excelent tires I hope that this experience won't turn you off on their products.

I did not drive my car to work this morning due to the fact that the tire looks really bad. It wasnt close to 35 degrees in Austin this morning but that is besides the point. I am going to have these tires prorated and hope that this doesnt happen again because I really like the tires, just not happy with the quality at this point.
