A t56 will mount to a sbc. The ls1 looses a hole for mounting. The lt1 t56 is a direct fit. I think the lt1 is an easier swap behind a sbc because of clutch/ flywheel.

The differents in the LS1 and LT1 T56 is the input shaft and the type of bell housing. Either use a LT1 T56 or aftermarket T56. I would be too much trouble to try and adapter a LS1 configure T56.

Depends on if you want to keep your original mechanical clutch linkage or convert to hydrualic... a lot of first gen F-body guys want to stay mechanical, so they go wish the LS1 T56. McLeod and Lakewood both sell kits to adapt the LS1 T56 to that.

The LT1 T56 uses a pull-type clutch, and the input shaft is too short to adapt it to the mechanical linkage on an older Chevy.

The lt1 trans would be your best bet, I carry the conversion flywheel for the two piece rear main engines.... This will allow you to use the stock lt1 t56 hydraulics and clutch assembly.... Bolts right up and works smooth put one in my truck years ago....

The LS1 T56 is almost a direct bolt up, I had one behind my 327, I used the original muncie bellhousing with all the original linkage with a Mcleod adapter plate. I didnt have to change the flywheel or clutch, I just ordered a 26 spline disc instead of a 10. Here is the plate you need

If anyone actually needs one PM me I am selling mine.

Not totally sure, but different input shaft, tail shaft hosuing and bell housing/clutch slave setup. Can be converted, by would just be a added cost as compared to starting with a GM configured one or by going to a Viper T56.. which is a lot stronger inside.

now I bought a LT1/T56 out of a 1995 camaro a few years ago, isnt the flywheel used on the LT1's a lot thicker then the usualy flywheel found on a Gen 1 small block chevy?

I'd want to take some measurements of the Flywheel surface to back of the block on a gen 1 small block setup and compair to that of LT1, LS1.

From my memory, I think the LS1 will be a lot closer.

When I bought the T56 i sold it to a friend of mine who was putting it behind an LS1. We were lucky and found a guy here on LS1 tech that was going the other way (ls1 trans to LT1 engine).

We traded the inputshaft, bell housing, and trans front plates (holds bearing for input shaft and internal slave cylinder bolts to it)
