Default sts turbo tailpipe problem

after 3 months without a muffler or a tailpipe on my STS kit, i put one there today and i hate it because the truck wont make full boost and would only make it at higher RPMs. i didnt put a muffler, it is a 3 inch tailpipe that goes on the right corner. what are you guys with turbos using as a tailpipe or what would you recommend?
mods are:4.8 5 speed, Sts Turbo @7psi, Pacesetter Lts, 220/220 cam

That's weird. I have a Borla XR-1 after the turbo, and the car makes full boost by 3600-ish rpms (and that's a T76). Granted I'm only boosting 5 psi right now. I didn't see much of a difference in spool time at all when I put it on. I'm sure this doesn't help much, but just wanted to let you know my experience.

Why do you have headers with the STS?

Put the stock manifolds back on and wrap the hotside all the way back to the turbo then use a bigger diameter tailpipe. That should drop the spool time down.

Loose the headers and wrap the stock exhaust all the way from the manifolds to the turbo.

The headers aren't helping, but if it was making boost before the tailpipe, and all that was changed was adding the tailpipe....something's got to be up.

the million dollar question, take the tailpipe back off, does it go back to normal?

it might be something else completely but a freak coinkydink that when you put the tailpipe on it cropped up.

It may all be in your head too. I did the same thing, with the car quieter it just doesn't sound as fast. I also felt like I had a lot more low end torque with the muffler after the turbo than without.

i have the stock exhaust pipe and i build boost fine. wrap your exhaust from your y-pipe all the way back to the turbo.. yoiu will cut down spool time (spool quicker)

this is before i wrapped it

Try iy w/out the tailpipe and see if it makes full boost again. If yes, use a BIGGER tailpipe, like a 3.5" diameter. There was a previous thread concerning tailpipe diameter, which should be 1.5x the turbo outlet diameter.

Good luck
