which oil pump?
Hi guys, the time is coming soon for me to do a cam swap. I already know what cam, springs, retainers, and rods, but what oil pump do you guys recommend? I am starting to hear the ls6 isnt much better than the one i have now. So which ones should i be looking in to?

i used the melling m295, its just a small upgrade from the stocker, but really its less of a problem with 01+ than it is for the first few years. i believe you already have the ls6 in your car
there is also a great disscusion on oil pumps lower on this page

I have used TSP and Melling oil pumps and both are great. On my formula, I took apart the original clean it up polished the inlet and shimmed the spring. At idle its always at 65-67psi and at wot its at 81-83. Im running 10w40 Castrol Syntec in it.

2. If you are at such a high rpm that you think a pump that is making probably 20psi more than stock will suck 6 quarts dry, you need to figure out why your oil is not returning quickly and strongly consider switching to a dry sump set up. My L98 motor made so much oil pressure that when cold at idle, it was off the crappy digital scale. After it got hot, would peg it on full throttle runs. 5 quarts, inferior design engine, and never had an issue....

hmmm....sounds like their is alot of opinions when it comes to oil pumps. I dont want to spin the motor over 6000, maybe 6500. I am not really sure. I am getting a cam in the 230ish duration, but with alot of lift. Does this matter? I dont mind spending a buck, but if all i need to do is port mine than that seems to be ok.

Your telling me it is $97? I looked at the one on thunder racings site, i dont remember how much it was but it was alot more than that. I assume since it is from there its probably a really good pump huh? If i port mine will that suffice? I have an 01 car so i hear it has the ls6. Anyone had problems from porting their stock one? My car has logged some miles on it, so would it just be good insurance to get a new one? Do they even go out? Never heard of one going bad, just me tho
